Anyone here have much experience with Direct tv DVR receivers? I just picked one up today and everything was going fine till I had to have the receiver dial in to the network for updates. I had to string a really nice phone line across 2 rooms to make that happen. I removed the phone line when it was done. everything works ok now. Does the phone line always have to be connected or is it OK to leave it unhooked?

 

eh... i would like to tell you yeah its ok, but i think that the dvr system is going to need it plug'd in all the time (or it wont record stuff)

Is there a USB port on the back of it? you could get a wifi router and a usb wifi adapter to perform the updates. Thats how my friends tivo updates the listings.

 

hmm. i have a wifi router already. i'll check out the operating manual for that.

 

directv DVRs get programming updates through the satellite - it calls in nightly to send info on programs you're watching etc and to get various non-programming updates.

If you leave it unplugged - it will be ok for about 2-3 weeks and then the DVR will complain that it needs to call in. I used to do this when i had no phone line near by. You can do a manual call in every once in a while just to shut it up.

 

i went to the TIVO HQ a few months ago to get a sneak peek at their HD D* box.

the phone call is a 2 week thing, minimum... but REALLY needed for PPV stuff...

 

yeah, that's what i thought. i set it up, it did it's initial call in and all that stuff. disconnected the phone line and it kept giving me the error about calling in whenever i tried to set anything to record. i'm gonna get that line fixed somehow...
