Digital SLR... which one and where?

Hey guys,

I'm thinking of switching from my Nikon Coolpix 8700 to a real digital SLR, maybe a Digital Rebel or something? I don't like not being able to switch lenses, plus having to electronically adjust the focus, etc. Could you guys guide me to some good cameras (~$800) and where I could purchase them?

Digital Rebel. Hands down.

Im the goon with the camera in hand. The original photo is amazing, but its HUGE... so you get the crappy compressed-bastardized version.

Nice pic! I couldn't figure out how you took the pic at first.

Where do you recommend on getting the Digital Rebel from, and how much should I expect to pay for it? (Body + lens kit). Also, what lens should I start out with?

Sorry, I can't help you there. I don't actually own that camera, but Ive used it a lot... The pictures it takes are simply amazing. We're going to mate it to my 10" telescope soon and take some 30second exposures... I'll post the results when we do. (Its like a standard SLR, so all you need is a T-Adaptor for the telescope).

I personally like the Canon Digital Rebel. Pictures come out beautiful even if you don't know how to use it (ha). It's the best bang for your buck SLR-wise, and you can find it online for extremely cheap compared to retail stores. Try www.bizrate.com or www.epinions.com for deals which include the body + lense --- check the site's ratings before ordering from them. I also don't own one myself but one of my good friend's does, and i use it quite often. The most fun is using a 15mm lense that costs of much as the camera body itself, haha. good-luck!

if you want an SLR - anything "Canon" will fit the bill.

I suggest B&H (www.bhphotovideo.com) for your purchase needs

Canon is the way to go. Their new metering system is awsome, its so damn easy. The Digital Rebels are one of the best all around cameras out there. As far as where to get them, just search around. Some times places have deals and such. But definately look into the Digital Rebel.

I like the Nikon D70 or the Canon EOS 20D. Both are awesome Cameras as well.

I own and love The Nikon D70, but the Rebel is a great deal. Canon's 20D looks like a great camera as well. Nikon has a cheaper entry level DSLR (Nikon D50???) comming next year but I don't have any specs yet.

No reason to buy the D100 (except for the Nikon vertical grip option) cause the D70 is a better camera in all regards including price.

BTW- there are firmware hacks that can turn a Canon 300D into a 10D if anyone has one out there.

One note- Watch out for "Gray market" cameras- cause if they need repair or worse if there is a firmware update you can't get it here in the US. You need to send it back to the country of origin. Or spend lots of extra $$. There are horror stories all over.
