Detonation sounds

Coming from someone that has never heard det, or never knew it when I heard it, what does it sound like? I read the term ping or metallic ping. Is it a ping or a clacking sound? I think of a pinging sound as like of you hit a metal bat on a metal railing. What I heard from my motor (window was down) was a metallic clacking sound from the motor for just a second @ high rmps. The clacking was very brief but it was not a slow clack, clack, clack but a very high speed clacking if that makes sense. I have heard it once before from my motor but don't know wtf it is.

If you had audiable det what would your car do? I was still hitting 17.5lbs of boost in the next gear and the one after that, it's not like it pulled timing or anything. So I guess my Q is does anyone have a sound clip LMAO!!! Or what would happen if you heard det? Would you notice a perfomance drop directly after the noise?

btw I just read an 8 page article on det and searched here and NASIOC but cannot find a description (detailed) of the sound.

think pebble rocks in coffee can with a trailing SSSSSSSS of a firework.

Also listen for the motor to miss a beat. that is the simplest way of putting it.

The sound of pinging is the sound of aluminum cans being crushed - for example, if you take a soda can and squeeze until it dents, it'll make a sound similar to that of pinging.

As far as detonation goes, you'll be able to hear it more on acceleration. Pinging happens in succession, as does detonation - so you'll hear the rythm when it happens.

My engine makes weird noises too, but I'm not too concerned. If it blows, new JDM engine time

So you're basically saying that Pinging and Detonation are the same thing?

You got the rhythm thing right though. it's like the engine is dancing and misses a step.

If you want to know what it sounds like, take an 04+ WRX, install uppipe+TBE, and run 87 octane. you'll then know the sound.

haha I was thinking built motor too! J/K I think I am fine, my motor only did this the one time (well two if you count the time on bad gas). I won't worry too much but I think that's exactly what I heard.

from what I know, pinging sounds like a whole bunch of marbles being shaken around in a tin can.

Wasn't sure if they were the same, I guess I was thinking of something else. But, they are the same thing.

just an FYI, if you can actually hear the car knocking, its car worse than you think

You could be knocking and not fully realize it, your best bet is to data log your car

Sometimes I hear what sounds like a rattling... I thought that it was the heat shield hitting the DP but it is not. I do hear the SSSSSSSS when it happens, what is the solution? i do not hear it as often when i put in 93+ octane.

Yeah I would totally be acting diffferent if Iwas able to recreate the sound. Did a bunch of pulls yesterday and seemed to have 0 problems and none of that sound I heard for a split second. I used to have a friend up here that had the software to data log, but he moved and doesn't talk to us lowly humboltians anymore.

I am still going to take it easy until I get the new turbo on and get tuned again.

Get a Cobb Access Port + protune.

Also try only getting 91 octane from 76 stations that have the 3 hoses per pump.
I don't know that these are any better, but it seams like if people are always filling up with 87 octane, then you come and get 91 octane that a bit of 87 octane fuel is still in the hose at the 1 hose pump and it goes in to your gas tank.

Just a crazy theory though.

And Charlie - ASAIK Detonation/ping/knock is all the same thing. The fuel+air ignites before the spark plug sparks. This is usually caused by heat in our cars.
Compressed air is hotter then uncompressed air. On an untuned turbo charged car there is a delay period where the ECU changes from open loop to closed loop. If you add uppipe/downpipe to make the turbo spin up quicker then the ECU is programmed for you end up stuffing more air in to the cylinder then what should be causing a lean condition.

That's cause you people are weird. hehe.

Make sure to do a proper brake in on your turbo.

If you have a Cobb AP you can use that cable along with Free Software like ecuExplorer. http://www.tari.co.za/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl
This software is very nice for being free.
