But, I maintain that any stealership that allows this type of activity to happen should be on notice that enthusiasts now have a very particular set of skills, skills we have acquired over very long hours surfing the web, skills that make us a nightmare for people like them.

Now that more of the story is out, it sounds to me like he was hoping their first offer of replacing it was followed up by an offer of a free upgrade (sti) or free car.
I'd say he deserved extra compensation if the dealer put him through the ringer but it sounds like he was greedy and decided to go that route himself. Mistakes happen at independent shops as well as dealerships. I think people just seem to hold dealerships to an unrealistic standard.
