Contemplating Paint....

My 2004 STI's paint is getting to the point where I need to either redo it, or sell the car.
I really like the car, and with the recent mods feel like it's just about done.
With my 18 month old, I need to keep a 4-door car, and really can't find anything I could afford (no AMG 63 in my future : ( ) I would like more

So - now I'm thinking about paint/body

It's a classic 20/20 car. Almost every body panel has waves or small dent's, the roof paint is thinning, the hood was keyed before I bought the car.

I'm waiting on an estimate from my favorite body shop, but have a sneaking suspicion I'm going to get a $5000-ish quote... which just can't happen.
This really won't help the value of the car in the future and I'm not interested in a "show car"

What have you guys done when it's time to repaint?

how bad is the paint? Is it mostly the front bumper/fenders, or the whole car?

There's a lot of wavy metal, even if I plastidip, it will need some body shop love.
The car is Java Black (metal flake) so I'm not sure the Plasti Dip would work very well

You could do...painted CF hood/trunk, wrap or just paint the roof. Maybe some paintless dent removal on those that can be done?

Plastidip is so tired already IMO, but it is an option I guess. Get a few estimates and see what you come up with. If you don't want a show car, then don't get a show car paint job. Yes, I know, if you're going to do it, do it right, but like you said, it won't add 100% more to the value of the car.

yea those rates are ridiclous. Should anyone quote that high, i might as well bring it to the dealer. you get a rental car with it.

I don't think that's unrealistic, but it also sounds like it is a nicer job than you were hoping for as well.

IMO, vinyl is ALL labor, so it isn't exactly cheap either. Unless you're doing it yourself.

The Works is a serious shop, they do lots of Ferrari work. I expected them to be a bit on the high-side with the quote... but that's more than double what I was expecting.

I'm going to get some other quotes and see what I can do here.
... Never seen Vinyl that looked nice for more than 6-months

That's insane. You'd be better off ordering new body panels on line and painting those.

Vinyl isn't super hard. It's only hard when you have to cut out the holes for door handles and key holes precisely, else you ruin the whole sheet of vinyl :P

Plastidip may look okay far away, but once you go up closer, you'll see the unevenness. It's hard to get matte to look nice even with a professional spray gun.
