Pretty bizarre, only hours after Colin's disaster, Dave Richards has a close call, he and his wife escaping with their lives from another chopper crash;

Whoa, that's pretty bizarre!

On a different note, this is why I have such a fear of helicopters. I will never, EVER ride in one unless I'm being airlifted to a hospital or something crazy. I hate those damn things! Gives me goosebumps just to picture myself being in a helo!

I came across this posted on another forum;

I mean after all how safe can an aircraft that beats air into submission be to travel in ? As my instructor used to say years ago "If your wings are travelling faster than your fuselage it can not be safe, therefore it has to be a helicopter".

Seriously, so many crash videos of them. No wonder heli pilots are in demand even though you hardly see them in the sky.

Helicopters are dangerous. We did graphics for a case at my work that has to do with altitude and engine failure. There's an altitude where helicopters are safe even when the engine fails and it can start up again. Then there are altitudes where it cannot start up again. This is called the "Dead Man's Curve" because you cannot recover from an engine failure. There are some people that work in this "curve" with great risk.

Here's how we depicted it.

so when you see heli's taking off straight up vertical, thats bad? wow never thought about it but it makes sense to take off with speed like a plane would.

It defitniely is a good thing to have some speed and lift at the right time. Here the the wiki on the height-velocity diagram: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Height-velocity_diagram
