why do you want coil-overs? Most springs wil do a better job on the street.

Read up on Ground Controls with Koni yellows. I've run this setup for about 6 years, and I love them. There's a thread posted not too long ago about someone just putting them on and loving them. For ~ $1k you can get any spring rate you want and one of the best, if not the best, shocks for a budget road setup.

Having been through the I-need-coilovers stage and driving on tein flex coilovers for a year, I would suggest going for koni/ground control set up.

To answer your question though, there isn't much below the tein price range. Look in to "Stance", or "BC" if you want to go even cheaper.

save your self the headache and don't buy cheap suspension. Its will never work out for the better.

While the price is cheap, a well researched and setup ground control/koni setup can outperform many, much higher priced coilover setups. Which is why SpecMiata guys have been using it for years. Don't be fooled by the price.

STi springs / Koni works too on the cheap. You can find used aftermarket STi springs cheap, and used aftermarket ones even cheaper. It's some work to get the Koni's into your strut housings, but It's easy to get quality ride for <$1k if you find a decent deal on springs.

Cheap coilovers suck and you are going to be pissed at yourself for buying something that makes your car bouncy, handle worse and wear out too soon.

I second the GC and Strut combo. I used to have the GC on KYB/AGX and I liked it. and it was $800 or so for the whole setup... You can get better struts/springs too for about the same price.

I run the Stance coilover set-up. Though, I don't recommend it for daily driving.

KW Variant 3s and SSTs are the only coilovers i'd recommend for daily duty with comfort, both are in the $2400 range. Get what others have already suggested or Tokico Dspecs struts and some good springs and you will be very happy

I <3 my ohlins fixed perch struts. though they high as well be coil overs. only difference is less $$$ than the ohlins coil overs and if your insurance requires you to have OEM equivalent suspension(ie. not coil overs).

Just about all the sub-$2k coil overs will not be comfortable for bay area highways/roads. Koni inserts+swift springs are your best bet below $1k.

the bc coils (bought used for $700) i have are 8/6 and i drive on 17, 880, 580, 92, 280, 101 at least once a week, and while my settings are turned towards the stiff side, i still find the ride comfortable enough for me and almost everyone who has been in my car...except for my girlfriend haah
