Thumbs down CNN: Masters of the Obvious

http://www.cnn.com/2003/TRAVEL/11/24/speed/index.html
To test the speeds of drivers, the Institute studied the driving habits in six states: Colorado, California, Georgia, Massachusetts, Maryland and New Mexico, as well as five major cities from 1996-1999.

In Colorado almost a quarter of drivers were traveling 80 mph or faster. Drivers in Atlanta posted the fastest speeds of the major cities. Despite a 55 mph limit on urban intestates, 78 percent of the drivers typically hit speeds of 70 mph and almost 20 percent are driving faster than 80, the study found...
Oh no, we need to ban our cars!!!

no no you've got it all wrong.

we need to have a federal speed limit of 15 mph for all public roadways.

I guarantee you the people in Colorado don't drive 80 mph. I lived there for 5 years and they're slow as hell, and sit in the number 1 lane going 63 mph Bastards.

On the other hand, having driven in Atlanta more than a handful of times (i.e. hundreds) I can verify they are accurate there. GA 400 isn't nicknamed the "Atlanta Autobahn" without cause

I've actually heard of people in Atl getting pulled over for doing about 60 or so (i.e. speeding) and told to SPEED UP (by the cop!) because they are a danger to traffic for only doing "5 over"!

How about someone study the pitful driving testing they have here for licenses? Or how many poor driver there are who are either not able to drive at a reasonable speed, OR are driving at such speeds when they LACK the skill to.

How about all these beater 70s and 80s HUGE caddys and crap, that can't accelerate, stop, or turn at all... eat gas and have 4000 of steel in them, aren't safe (meaning their belts and all that won't save many people from injury within), and are like 2 tone killing machines???

-We need to weed out poor drivers, and make the requirments to drive HARDER... MUCH HARDER. We need to put driving skill over a false sense of a right to drive.

at least they didnt do that test in florida. they would have found that 99.9% of the population drive 35 mph in a 55mph zone, and the cops issue tickets for 36mph in a 55 zone cause you were "speeding"

driving isn't a right, it's a privledge that has to earned. people need to be made to understand that. we absolutely need to raise the bar in terms of the skill level required to earn the privledge of driving a car on public roads.

that said, most police agencies will tell you that one in ten drivers (at least here in CA) doesn't even have a license.

I wonder if this is a case where politics and economics form an alliance to generate revenue for the state(s). I've heard and spoken myself about the need to raise standards and requirements for a CA driver's license. If they were to disqualify a hypothetical 25% of CA present drivers, this would create a big reduction in revenue for many state agencies (DMV, Franchise Tax Board - who's gonna buy a new car if they can't drive it?, private insurance companies). Is this the reason why we still see numbskulls on the road?

I didn't know the number was that high but whatever the case, it can't be fixed by offering driver's licenses to illegal immigrants. I sometimes also see news reports of convicted drunk drivers who repeatedly drive drunk without a valid license - W.T.heck, impound their vehicle when they lose their license!

I second that. I've passed every driving test with flying colors. Not bragging, it's just too easy. A car is a deadly weapon in the wrong hands, testing should be taken seriously. And while we're at it, vision and reaction tests should be required upon renewal.

Driving is not a right it is a privilidge.

God, I know a girl down the street from me that failed 3 times before she got her license on the 4th try. How the hell do you do that?

The problem with making it a harder test is twofold (at least). One, you lose the revenue from those drivers. Two, those drivers can no longer get to work in a reasonable amount of time. Our public transportation system has to be beefed up considerably before we go taking people's licenses because they're retarded. The problem with that is that we don't have population densities high enough to make public transportation feasible for most people. It's an endless cycle that we won't have to deal with until gas gets super expensive for a looooong period of time. Not only will that make people think twice about what they drive (SUV's***cough****), but it'll make a lot of people look at public transportation in a whole new light.

i suspect that its a combination of this, and the fact that we live in a country that glorifies automotive culture, has virtually no useable public transportation, and have developed a culture where telling people that they are incompetent isn't acceptable. it doesn't seem to matter whether its a drivers test, 4th grade, high school, or a high tech training course. we just don't fail people anymore, its too detrimental to their self esteem -- or so some would argue (not me obviously).

Yeah, it just won't work in the US in general, and California in particular. We love cars too much, and shun public transportation.
