civic or legacy
just sold my '01 OBS to get rid of the payment and pay cash for something.
needed reliability and GOOD MPG (OBS was netting me ~23mpg tops).
was gonna get a Leg wagon or older OBS...both of which i didn't feel comfortable buying w/ >175K miles on them (about what i was looking at in that price range).
plus the interiors in the ones i looked at FELT like they had gone 175K miles or worse.
picked up a 96 Civic LX sedan for $3K.
has 175K on it and runs fine and the interior doesn't feel or look like it's close to showing much wear (although stock Civic seats are teh suk!).
isn't anything cool looking, nor is it a powerhouse (read: downshift at freeways speeds to climb hills).
nothing special, but it gets the job done.
i've averaged ~30MPG no matter how crappy i drive.
i live in the sierra foothills and commute to Folsom so i have a lot of up/down hill driving and the MPG are rock solid.
after this first rain i quickly missed the AWD confidence (i.e. understeer at any aggressive speed/turn) but don't miss the monthly payment and gas bill.
plus insurance is DIRT cheap for the civic compared to the Subaru.
maybe i'll go ricer and put a K-series in it to get it up the hills, but i doubt it.

I bought a 1990 Legacy Wagon for $1000 on Craigslist. I put About $500 into mechanical. Tinted the windows put the old WRX wheels on it, slapped the Konis and pinks I had lying around. I LOVE THIS CAR!!!. The Utility is amazing, great gas mileage, AWD, I've already made a couple of road trips(500+ miles each). It runs like a champ. Doesn't look too bad either. I'm going to keep this car til it dies. Seriously, I love it. If your going to buy a beater get something with some utility function.
