center diff NOT blown. yay for me....
yo BAIC
soooo, there i was there i was there i was....in....my...garage....
I had just been under my car taking a look at what it was going to take to get to the center diff. not too bad i thought. then i also remembered i had busted my rear diff temp sensor jacking the car up to put on my summer wheel/tires. "huh", i thought. "maybe that stupid idiot light trips something in the DCCD....". So off i go with the owners manual. low and behold, it DOES open the center diff when that light is on as a saftey measure.
wow. really.
back the car out onto an old snow patch. gun it. all 4 wheels peel out and the car has mad traction. BOOOOOYAAAAAA!!!! no blown center diff. couldnt be happier.
now if it would only stop snowing so i can put my summer tires BACK on. car looks SIKO with the wheels.
anyway, thanks for listening. i am just happy i didnt blow the damn thing.

Nice. That's an awesome feeling when you have already accepted a really bad conclusion only to find out it's not as bad as you thought. I was having this knocking/clacking sound in my m3 and thought I needed to replace the two timing chains and tensioners but it turned out it was only the vanos (bimmer vtec) which is much cheaper and easier to get to. ~$200 vs. ~$1800. Finally managing to wiggle the turbo inlet into place is definitely the second best feeling you can get from working on your car.

Glad you figured it out before you had to do some work and spend some money, I spent about $900 trying to fix a bad clunk that turned out to be an axle nut.
Yes, this has to be Murphy's law or something. Whenever you over-think the harsh consequences of a mistake, things usually end up fine.... but when you make a tiny mistake and just say 'oh well, it won't matter' and don't fix it, that's when you're really screwed!

dccd is a very complicated beast. i have read, oh, 5 diff articles since the center diff "issue". sometimes just sitting back and thinking for a bit is good for the creative juices to flow.
and it IS a good feeling when you realize 25" of electical tape to fix the problem saved my ****. the car was especially happy today, scooting LOUDLY around town, happy to spool early with the cold temps.
