Thank You CHP Officer Silva in Sac.

Got pretty lucky not getting a speeding ticket from him.
Went up to Tahoe/Kirkwood this weekend with 04caliwrx(Matt) and 04impreza(Aaron). About a couple miles after getting onto Hwy 50 in Sac. my radar detector(Escort 8500) started blaring and displaying laser. I was like Ah F***. I was doing between 75-80mph in the second lane from the left. I looked off into the shoulder to the right and their he was, car sideways tucked back under an overpass. I knew he must of had got me. We pass him and he didn't jump out right away with his lights on. Either way I tell Matt to take down my radar detector. Soon as I say that I see him jump onto the freeway. He jumped on slowly but soon catches up to me and lights me up. I proceed to pull over roll down the windows, turned the car off and threw the keys on the dash.
He comes up and tells me he stopped me bc I was doing 84mph, I was shocked bc I believe I was doing far less than that. I didnt argue, really no point. I gave him all my info and he went back to his car. Comes back a few minutes later and asks me if I wanted a speeding ticket or a window tint ticket. I was like Uh? He completly threw me off with that one. I was like I'll take the window tint ticket. I signed the ticket and he told us to have a safe drive up and good night. Guess I was really lucky.

He gave you an option for the ticket huh? Yeah, the Window Tint ticket was definitely the lesser of the two tickets so that is pretty cool that he did that for you.

Why would you remove/hide the detector?

Probably thats what didnt get me a ticket. Pretty sure if he saw it, he wouldnt have let me off with just a window tint ticket. I know they are not illegal in California. I have had a officer that pulled me over in the past who also had let me go with a warning tell me "Look I know you speed, thats why you have a radar detector"

Nope; the last couple times I've been pulled over (and questioned at length about the car), & given the stink eye for the Valentine-1, I've driven off with only verbal warnings. It's ALWAYS up the officers discretion to write you up for anything, hence why he gave the OP a choice between violations. A non GPS/navigation device may be mounted to the windshield, the law changed last year to specify what you can mount to the windshield & where, basically pick the lower left or right corner.

My V1 has been dash mounted at the top of my clock pod in plain sight for 3 years, nothing to hide if its legally mounted. If the officer wants to assume I'm a speed racer because I have a V1, that's -1 for reasonable doubt in court.
