It's only silly expensive if you want all the fanciest gear, entry level stuff isn't that much much more than CB gear.

and you are either clueless... or kidding- right?- if you didn't have license restrictions on bandwidth usage all radio transmission would be a total CF like family band walkie-talkies are.

You don't have a HAM license and would rather talk on CB? fine, but you won't be working radio on any rallies, but then again, that might not be what you want to do, whatever...

like i said specialized groups uses them. when i got 4 wheeling with the club (www.gettinoff4x4.net) this is our primary form of comms.

truckers still use them. you'd think with the popularity of cell phone would take over but visit any truck stop and you'll still see a big portion of the sales floor still jammed with CB gear and stuff.

some said that when the FCC removed the licensing part of it, it went to hell.

also, CB legally cant over 4 watts of power. hence the reason for the club i belong to, wanting to transition to ham gear, which can go as high as 200 watts for the lowest rung of license.

just get handheld radios.

been using a handheld cb radio for over a decade. make sure you tune the antenna. cost should be around $80 or so for the radio.

as for ham, make sure you get your license first. then get a cheapie chinese knockoff by wouxun. i have one. dual band. 2m and 440. cost me around $110. which is a bargain considering my first HT, a yaesu vx-7r cost over $350.

in the south bay goto ham radio outlet off 101 and lawrence expr. they dont carry the wouxun line yet but all other gear, thats where i got started.

http://www.powerwerx.com/wouxun-radios/ for info on the wouxun radios.

here's what my midland cb radio looks like:

these work well (I've had one), decent range and built in GPS.

Easy to download hiking maps/contour maps for backcountry and stuff.....waypoints, etc, etc.

I use a HAM radio for the rally car and service truck and volunteering at rallies. You can get good equipment for decent prices, just shop around a bit.
