I have a 10m set up in my truck, plus a nice evergreen foot warmer under the seat. I can drop into the silly channels and talk to people in china on a good night (and have)...however I have also melted a few antena with it.
I do need to get my ham lisence so I can go up to 2m.

I've reached out pretty far on sideband. Never melted anything but have played around with linear. The good ol' days.

last place i went ws 10-4 comm. in modesto but they have changed.. they used to have a good vibe. Kinda like how radio shack used to be before they stopped selling pieces parts.
As overbear mentioned and IMHO if you're going to bother getting into this sort of thing I would recommend getting your HAM license and running a HAM radio in your car. I say this because once you start you'll want to go that far anyway so why not get your education out of the way, get some real equipment and have fun talking to people all over the world.

Slightly off topic but does anyone have a frs/gmrs that they could recommend for hiking and snowboarding? All my digging says that these types of radios suck in the mountains. Any thoughts?

I'll add to the chorus saying "Get your HAM tag"
CB is pretty much only used by truckers anymore, but the HAM license opens a whole other world of communications capabilities, APRS, working repeaters, Rallies, (A HAM tag and radio gets you into the best spectating spots on Rallies) all kinds of fun stuff like that
