I have a 10m set up in my truck, plus a nice evergreen foot warmer under the seat. I can drop into the silly channels and talk to people in china on a good night (and have)...however I have also melted a few antena with it.

I do need to get my ham lisence so I can go up to 2m.

There is a honist to god CB shop in san leandro, old guy runs it, he tweaks the hell out of the radios in there too.

As overbear mentioned and IMHO if you're going to bother getting into this sort of thing I would recommend getting your HAM license and running a HAM radio in your car. I say this because once you start you'll want to go that far anyway so why not get your education out of the way, get some real equipment and have fun talking to people all over the world.

Slightly off topic but does anyone have a frs/gmrs that they could recommend for hiking and snowboarding? All my digging says that these types of radios suck in the mountains. Any thoughts?

I'll add to the chorus saying "Get your HAM tag"

CB is pretty much only used by truckers anymore, but the HAM license opens a whole other world of communications capabilities, APRS, working repeaters, Rallies, (A HAM tag and radio gets you into the best spectating spots on Rallies) all kinds of fun stuff like that

I have one in my jeep. I turn it on when I drive it. Or use it when I'm 4 wheeling.

The problem is, ham is expensive as ****, and requires a stupid lisence for airwaves that belong to the citizens of the US in the first place and should have no such restrictions on it.
