Question Carfax

Finally found a great deal on a diesel truck to buy so I can finally tow my boat. Its cheap enough I wouldn't have to sell my wrx as well.
However its got a salvage title and from looking at it I can tell that it wasn't wrecked extremely bad and the damage hasn't been fully fixed. I wanted to carfax the vin but I was unaware it was 40$ to get the report.
SO i was wondering if anyone knew of any free vehicle history reports and anyway else to get around paying 40$.

Any help would be appreciated.

I kept getting the "vehicle report not available" I'm just curious why?

Anyone have an idea what differences there are in having a salvage title? Higher insurance? registration?

Here in the fine print:

If "Website One" doesn't work, then try "Website Two", same goes for "Website Three". Always have a vin number in the textbox.

**Note: After you run the vin, if you get the error "AutoCheck Report Not Available", that means your car has a salvage title.

___
Try entering your VIN into google, as sometimes they have the original Salvage holder, of where they sold the damaged vehicle to the public to fix.

From what i've heard Salvage title his a bit higher insurance due to a higher possibility to fail. However, there are less taxes by government. From my own Subie, which has a salvage title, there was less tax to register. As for insurance rate, it was uncalled for as I cannot compare with a salvage vs "new"/"used"

Not sure why it's not working for you. I've used it on a few cars and mines as well. Even with AutoCheck or Carfax, you're not going to get a thorough report. My last suby got into an accident that had cost $9.5K to repair and I had reported it to insurance and the DMV. The accident doesn't show up on the Carfax or Autocheck.

No i'm sure the vehicle has a slavage title. Really good deal. Fender and hood were replaced and drivers side headlight bucket/ core support crunched minorly. no frame damage from what I can see. Doesn't seem like enough damage to force a slavage in my eyes.

I bought a used truck at the beginning of this year that came with a carfax report from the dealer. Carfax showed no accidents. Looking at switching insurance now and they run my VINs and come to find out it was in a major accident in 2010. Don't trust carfax. Ask your insurance if they can run a check for you. If there was a claim they will find it.

I know for a fact that my wrx does NOT have a salvage title, however I still get the error "AutoCheck Report Not Available". I think that website is full of ****.

I think I got trolled. -_-

Whether or not it was "enough" for a salvage, the insurance company thought it was. The previous owner could have still had a loan on it and the insurance company could very easily consider it totaled compared to what the person owed. Paint alone can be reason to total an older car, since a good paint job and OEM replacement parts at even a decent shop are not cheap.

Or maybe you had entered in your VIN wrong. Try this VIN (SAJDA24C91LF24296), which I pulled randomly from CL.

It's not a salvage title.

I posted the VIN to show that it's an actual working site.

@OP, my bad I forgot salvage titles don't show up on autocheck.

Alright cool sounds like I will go by and talk to my insurance company once i'm done with jury duty...tomorrow will be my 3rd day.

BTW its a '99 F250 super duty. 7.3 turbo diesel 6 speed 4x4. Reg cab Longbed. 108k original miles. Friend of mine owns it and besides some rough edges from previous owners wreck; its a great work truck. $6500 I'd say deal if I can get it for 5500 or 6k. (Honestly I'm not a ford fan or a longbed fan but I've been looking for a dodge cummins for a year already.)
