car wont start. im thinking starter *vid*
the car started fine.. i did an oil change and now this. wont start. took the battery into the parts shop and it was fine. took the starter into the parts shop.. it was fine. guy said it might be a seized motor.. motor was fine.. i cant figure it out. I'm thinking the neck of the starter isn't engaging or something
i ordered a new starter in hope that is the problem.. its taking forever to come in. anyone have a working starter laying around i can use for a quick test? I'm trying to avoid push starting the car and possibly causing further damage.
mucho thank you.
here is a vid of the sound

Its not your starter motor or the battery, sounds like the solenoid is either not engaging or the teeth on your flywheel are damaged.
Try rolling the car a foot or so in gear with the key off to rotate the flywheel to fresh teeth and/or use a long extention and give the starter a few whacks with a mallet to see if he solenoid is just stuck. If you can't get it unstuck its part of the starter so just replace the whole thing.
If intact the motor is seized, which is doubtful if it didn't just die, you wont be able to move it in gear.

Everyone always thinks when you tell them to hit a starter with a mallet that they are getting trolled. It is a standard automotive procedure to unstick a solenoid. Broken flywheel teeth are liveable if you don't mind rolling your car a little if it winds up in that spot when you stop the car. I drove a sabb like that for 2 years!
-Listened to the video, sounds like the starter is spinning but not engaged that supports the two theories above.
Good luck bud!

You could apply 12v to the solenoid and you should here it click into the extended position where the teeth engage the flywheel. If it does not move back and forth with 12V applied, the solenoid is either stuck or defective. I had a car when I was a teenager that did this and I did not have any tools, I kicked it as hard as I could (kinda like the scene from transformers 3) and the solenoid freed up and the car started, people walking in the parking lot were giving me weird looks though.

whacked the starter a few times and didn't change anything..
I'm not able to move the car in gear?? i took a wrench and turned the motor using the crank pulley. everything was free.. flywheel spun normally? idk!

Try in a high gear like 4th and if need be start pushing in neutral then drop it into 4th just make sure the keys off.
Edit: just saw you used a wrench, its your solenoid then, just wait for the starter.

Talk dirty to the starter, Smack that ***** around with a hammer. If that doesnt work. Get a meter out and do a load test on the wires leading up to it.
Make sure you have a GOOD ground!!! Clean and hooked up nice in tight!!

The subaru starters arent notorious for it but the contacts in the starter fails, you can either rebuild it or just buy a remanufactured, or a new starter. But thats if your starter was the culprit. Can you hear the fuel pump humming? If so, that would rule out the fuel portion of trying to solve the problem. Check to see if the power supply voltage between the starter motor connector terminal and engine ground is more than 10V.
Hope that helps
