I would guess it is something like the chips they put on diesel turbos.

I'd guess that its just some simple circuitry to modify the MAF or IAT signal to try to lean out the stock ECU. I would expect the ECU to learn around it fairly quickly.

Yup - these things are huge in the Focus community - basically a resistor that changes the MAF voltage....and, as Ed suggested, the ECu learns around it in about 40 minutes or normal driving (at least on the Focus).

So they...what...plug it in before they run and then unplug it when they're done?

I guess. I dont know anyone who ACTUALLY used one on a regular basis. The people who were suffciently into racing their focus (which takes a special breed), already had enough parts on their cars and suffcinieltly modified ECUs to not need such a (dangerous) hack

stock wrx is about 162. Atleast thats what Turboxs's did.
