Latley I've been noticing this little thumping noise coming from the right rear wheel area of the car. It's more obvious when I'm driving over speed bumps / train tracks ect.. And yes I know there is a normal thud noise when driving over bumps but this sounds a little different. So far what I've done is make sure my swaybar was still tight, checked tire pressure, and took everything out of my trunk including the spare so I would be sure theres nothing just bouncing around in my trunk making the noise. But still I keep hearing the noise and don't know what to do about it. Could someone ride in my right rear passenger seat while I drive around for a bit to check out what the noise is??? I'd hate to have something go wrong on my next drive to go up snowboarding.
i am not sure if this is related to your noise or not, but happened to me before... is your trunk completely empty? Try removing the spare cover. you know that little brown board thing? also check your jack and make sure is secure. i had those things making noises before... good luck

There is absolutley nothing in my trunk right now except the jack, but thats in the compartment thing on the left side, so I don't think thats the noise but I'll take it out anyways.
This is weird...have the same problem.
I have the exact same problem with my stock 02 wagon. Right rear passenger side seems to be where the noise is coming from. On mine, is sounds like a small "pop" noise. Most noticible when going over bumps, but I hear it going from 1st to 2nd when I have the clutch in. Seems like when the car jolts a bit, I hear it. I took everything out of the trunk, took out the jack and the spare, took out the little board thingy under the trunk mat, took the ski attachments off the roof. I only hear it when I am driving the car because I was literally jumping on the rear bumper while it was stopped, no noise. I was gonna go to Albany Subaru for them to check it out.
Funny thing is that I did take off the wheels last week to paint the calipers. After that I noticed the noise, but I am not sure if that had anything to do with it. Could over torqing the lugs do this? Hell, the noise could have been there for a long time, but never noticed it since I usually have the stereo volumn on at 7 or 8.
Do you wanna meet up tonight (monday) at Newark's Hobbytown to check it out?

I have a similar noise but I think it comes from the front not the rear. Happens when I brake or shift into 2nd a bit abruptly or when turning into my driveway - there's a bump. Almost a pop or rather than a thunk. Definately sounds like it's outside the cabin.
Happens frequently but not consistently.
Front suspension and wheels all seem tight from my cursorary inspection.
I thought it was the exhaust since I lost a hangar bolt but replacing it didn't fix the noise
My best guess so far is that its the splash guard flapping since I've lost a couple of the plastic retaining pegs but I haven't tested that theory
If you get it diagnosed I'd love to know.

Did you get this figured out Jeff?
gotwrx- check the torque on your front struts where the shaft bolts to the strut top. That's the most frequent source of suspension clunks.

I kept hearing a strange sound from my trunk area after I installed aftermarket endlinks on my rear anti-sway bar. It would be most noticeable when driving over abrupt speed bumps. I looked at the fasteners and they looked secure but I put a box wrench and ratchet to them, snugged them down a tad more, and that solved the problem. They aren't overly tightened now and there is no binding AFAIK.

Albany Subaru fixed my noise problem. The problem is a "body seam" in the rear was loose. I don't really know what that means, but on the invoice it says it has nothing to do with the wheel, nor suspension. It was a "body seam" that was loose and they stretched it back and now the noise is gone. I guess you have to take the panels off to fix this because they basically took the whole day fixing/diagnosing it.
