1/3/04 - Laguna Seca Stories (Post Here)
Hi Everyone,
It was good to see a few subies still representin'. I think I saw to STIs (1 x Blue, 1 x Silver) and a TON of WRB WRX sedans (+1 WRB Wagon).
And we all thought it was going to rain ... nothing but blue skies ... cold, but blue. Anyone enjoy the early morning ice in a couple of the shaded turns?
I'll see if I get my video converted to MPEG or WMF.
Anyone else have any stories?
Steve

Here's the summary of my day:
Today I riding on some fresh, full tread Bridgestone Potenza S-03s (since I thought it was going to rain). I'm also trying out a new setup ... softer springs 8K/7K and 5 clicks (from softest) out of 15 (more street friendly). Babysmurf also pointed out that I'm running a lot less negative camber in the rear ... if her's is really -1.5 in the back, then I'm a good, solid 0.0 (yikes, how the hell did this happen?). The front are a more reasonable -2.5deg camber (zero castor and zero toe). Gotta get a new alignment afterwards.
I'm keeping track of all my laps from the Start/Finish bridge ... I also keep track of elapsed time from Start/Finish to the bridge between Turn 5 and 6 (after the sound check - its about half way through the track ... I can then figure out where i'm sucking, upill or downhill).
Session 1 - Riding with Killaho and getting use to the new suspension setup.
. First lap sucked *** ... 2:09.xx ... half lap was a lousy 1:03.
. 2nd Lap - 1:59.xx, half lap = 0:57
. The the Viper blows a tire right in front of us (got that on tape too ... i just thought he really locked 'em up). After pitting and getting that piece towed off the track, we resume:
. We then rattle off a few more laps (half-lap time) ... 2:01(59), 1:58(58) and 1:58(58).
Session 2 - Empty car ... tire pressure set at 38psi-hot all around
. 1 x 1:56 (55s)
. 3 x 1:55 (54s-55s)
. 3 x 1:53 (54s)
. As you can tell, shaving a little time off the front half is a huge time saver in my overall lap times.
Session 3 - Empty Car
. 1 x 2:06 (56)
. 1 x 1:59 (59)
. 1 x 1:56 (56)
. Viper blows another set of rear tires and is stuck on the track. (can't someone build an American that can stay together?) They shutdown the track again.
. Then I forget to turn on my camera for the resumed session. That really sucked, since the only two cars in front were Luc's Race Mustang (sick!) and Arnaud's Radical (even nastier!). I had a clear track the rest of the session, once those two left me in their dust. I'm sure I had a few fast laps there ... oh well, no proof --> no truth!

Session 4 - Last Session of the Day ... Empty Car.
. Here's where I usually get stupid and spin or something ... I know this, you know this ... but its going to be fun trying rip off one more fast lap.
. 1 x 1:54 (54)
. 1 x 1:53 (54)
. 6 x 1:52 (54) - unbelievably 4 of these were in a row!
. 1 x 1:51 (54)
. 1 x 1:50 (mid-53)
. 1 x 1:49.7 (53) --- YAHOO!
I'm was so stoked about the 1:49.xx, that I almost go off the track at Turn 2 (I'll get the video posted in a little bit).
Last Parting Words:
SubyDude - DON'T LIFT before the crest, slam it down until you get into the braking zone for Turn 2.
BabySmurf - I didn't dive bomb you ... i was simply trying to sneak past you on the inside of Turn 5.
Peace ... out!

Okay ... I'm STUPID - I just figured out that I was running the entire day in low boost mode (210whp vs. 255whp) ... what's worse, is that I put in over $50 of race gas to mix with the $3.50 91 octane to run "safe" ... hell, in low boost mode, I could almost run 87 and be "safe".
What a waste of $$$.
What a waste of $$$.

I got the first vid, Steve, but the last two links came up with a 'site not found'. Maybe too much traffic on that server, or something?

I think yahoo changes my briefcase links as soon as there is too much traffic (i guess they don't want to be in the webhosting business). Does anyone have a spot for me to drop these files to?
Thanks,
Steve

If no-one else speaks up before tomorrow morning, I can webhost the vids for you. Send them via e-mail to me at

Looks like my buddies time of 1:47 in a 4400lb/350HP car was (barely) safe from the Scoobies

Hi Ed,
Thanks ... that is an interesting domain name! Was you friend running on r-compounds? I was running faster times on my other setup and being down +20% in whp hurts if you don't hit the uphill turns properly. The radical (with a new owner) were hitting mid 1:30s (from what I've heard ... yikes!), but being able to do 2Gs in turns and 4Gs under braking gotta help a little.

http://www.regionofdoom.com/ is the domain for our local Impala SS Club. Big evil-looking cars deserve an evil-sounding club name
My buddy was on VictoRacers, 275/40R17 on 17x9.5" rims. Not small, but then it isn't a light car
. My current race setup on my Impala is those same tires/size on the front, but 315/35R17 on 17x11" on the back (and lighter rims than that guy was running). However, I'm not nearly as good a driver as he is. Alas, he went and got a Viper so I'm not sure how much he road races his Impala any more.

good to see you again cupertinosteve - your vids are great! i really really have to get a camcorder setup for my next track day.
it was my first time at laguna so no real exciting stories in my run group. although, it was amazing to see a stock audi a6 wagon on the track. damn that thing was slow!
fun meeting the rest of the subies.... will definitely run yellow next time out (hate having instructors put their hands on my steering wheel) and get myself a hotlap timer... cheers!
