Calling All Hackers!!! Volvo Replaces Key/Fob with Bluethooth Phone App!
For those of you who have not seen this Jalopnik/Gizmodo post...
Oh yeah, I do not see any security, legal or logistical issues there at all. I would like to have been in this design meeting...I am all for cool new technologies and trying stuff out, but this had me
Volvo will offer its customers a Bluetooth-dependent smartphone app that serves as a copy of their vehicle’s keys and fob. It can be used to open a car’s doors, trunk, activate or deactivate its security system, and even allow the vehicle to be started without the physical key being anywhere in the vicinity.
...
The app’s most useful feature, however, is its ability to share virtual keys with other users of the app. So if a friend or family member wants to borrow your car while you’re out of town, you can simply send them a virtual key and their smartphone with then be able to access and operate the vehicle.

Technically it's aready out there they finally just put it to work.
Not the least bit surprised. I know there's a way to do it w Mopar Products, you can remotely unlock, roll down, etc w a phone on certain vehicles for certain situations. Add in the audio/software app and throw in a few more lines of code and go for it. Heck, technically I don't even need my fob in the ignition anymore, I can do something and then start my truck w a finger.
Why I still prefer an actual key, even if now it's inside my fob.
