Go south on 101 to Hwy 25
East on 25 a mile or two past 2nd RR crossing to Shore Rd.
Left on Shore Road.
Go straight through the stop sign, Shore Rd. changes to Fairview Rd. at that point
Another mile and you get to a light at 156.
Left at the light onto 156, it will merge into 152 just before Casa de Fruita.

Concratulations! You just bypassed the screwed up part of the 101 to 152.

On busy Holidays, CHP will post a temporary stop sign there, so watch for it. And maybe they stop because they've been caught in the mess going the other direction and realize that stopping is better than having someone who's sat in traffic for 2 hours pull out in front of you in desperation?

oh, since you're taking the 5 down and there's bound to be a lot of CHP on the prowl this weekend, i HIGHLY suggest that you bring or borrow a Valentine1 for this trip. 5 over the limit or 10 over the limit, you don't want to be the lucky winner that a CHP chooses.

I tried Panoche road, but decided NOT to turn left on to Little Panoche road
and instead went straight and ended up on New Idria rd, which I guess eventually ends
at Coalinga road, but after 30 minutes of driving on a road that was gettin worse and
worse, I decided to turn around since I had no idea where i was going to end up.

being that it's a holiday weekend, i would suggest getting ready to prepare for the worst.

however, have a safe and fun trip!

be careful, too. I got a ticket off the 152 los banos exit coming back home from LA...

152 is a parking lot on fridays and through some parts of the rush hour commute.
if you have to drive on 152 on friday.. leave very early or very late.

ifrom 101 and 152 itll take you about 45 minutes to get out to i5 with little or no traffic .. make sure to get to 101 and 152 at least 45 minutes before rush hour ~3pm.. or after say 7:30pm when it starts to clear out.

not a 100% guarantee.. ive bene on 152 during a busy time andits cleared out part way up the hill. .and ive been there when its been hell all the way out to los banos.

Usually 156 is a parking lot headed up to 152. not sure how much time it will save you.. but it cuts off the botton 1/10 or so of the trip out to i5.. you still have to go about a mile to get past the two lane section of the road.

Usually? Maybe during rush hour on a Friday afternoon of a holiday weekend. But I've taken that route I don't know how many times... hundreds... and have only had traffic a couple times, and one of those was due to a truck that was on fire half way up the grade.

If you're going all the way to LA, you could just stay on 101. It's a more scenic drive for sure, but might be a little slower as people tend to haul *** on 5, but many parts of 101 they do the same.

if you take 101, watch your speed near king city. and if you want *great* japanese food, stop by tsurugi in san luis obispo.

word- that is a well known speed trap, usually 3-4 CHP cruisers roaming up and down 101, but they don't tend to wander too far from the Winchell's in King City

There is a way to get around that...my friend just showed me the way...

just a few miles after the garlic factory, and just before the school, make a right on Frazier lake Rd. Keep going till you hit Shore Rd where you make a left. Continue on to Fairview Rd, and make a left on 156. That will drop you just right at the 156/152 interchange, where traffic merges and nobody stops...

I'll just stick to the 152. I'll be driving at night so the scenic part of the 101 doesnt matter, plus my house is right off the 5 near magic mountain.

I should be leaving late enough to miss any rush hour traffic

As for the CHP..I had a brand new V1 overnighted to me and is sitting on my desk next to me as I type
