What year is your car?

I just got mine fixed. Mine was a blown compressor and bad expansion valve... not cheap.

like ~$700 in parts + labor.

I guess the most common problem for failure on our cars is the expansion valve... made by GM. It's only like a $70 part, but install is a BIATCH.

It's probably the expansion valve...

Yeah, mine went out about a month and a half ago... right at the start of the 90+ then 100+ degree weather. No a/c is not an option.

Like I said, it's most likely just the expansion valve so $70 + labor which will probably be a couple of hours @ ~$100/hr. + recharge. So... $300-$400 maybe.

One of the shops up here said that something like 4 out of the last 5 a/c's that dumped that he's seen on our cars has been the expansion valve.

Hope that helps. :\

Recharge is not hard; just make sure you have the pressure gauge inline. I just did it for my Protégé this weekend and it went fine.
I've been living without AC in my 00RS for a while now and it's really bugging' me... I don't know of any AC specialist and I've tried recharging the r134a and still nothing. A shop did it btw, so I know it's not the refrigerant. BTW, it should run for $60-$70 for the recharge.

I spoke with my friend Johnny, whom used to be the head of Subaru tech down at Santa Cruz Subaru. I told him my problem and he advised me to check the pressure switch and the expansion valve. I think I just need to find a good shop to take care of this…

Just got off the phone with Ronnie (Johnny's brother) at Santa Cruz Subaru. He said there is a good chance the revolution sensor on the compressor is bad and might need to replace the entire compressor. but without looking at it, it's hard to say. Also, older models like mine (00RS) might not even have the sensor. I looked at the service manual for my car and I don't see such sensor, only a Compressor Saving Sensor. He said most of the Subaru AC problems he has seen at Santa Cruz Subaru were due to leak. He suggested me to discharge the system and recharge with r134a + UV dye.

btw, something like this should be good enough to recharge your system.
