Buying an Oregon car and registering it here...?

I'm hoping to purchase a used car from Oregon and was wondering how that affects the registration process here. Do I still have to pay taxes? Or just the registration fees?

Anyone with experience please pass on some info...

thanks!

I guess I could go to the DMV and look this up...

I just bought a car about 2 months ago that was from Oregon. You need a signed oregon title and u need to fill out a form @ the DMV which they will provide you with. it will ask for ur name, address, DL #, and vin # and a few other things as well, it will also ask you for a stated purchase price. When you register it you will have to surender the oregon plates and they will give you CA plates on the spot. You will have to pay tax on the purchase price and a registration fee as well.

dont think about storing it in oregon also.

it takes about 90 days from when the time you buy it until you can take into kalif.

that way you can prevent paying sales tax. but you also have to do all sorts of paper work too...

I wonder how much tax they charge you if you got it for free, or say paid $1..

You'll need a smog check to register an out of state car here too.

Oh and if you start to register it, but don't quite have all the paperwork ready, be sure to pay all the reg fees, as they will charge you interest at an insane rate as well as amass late fees after some ungodly small amount of time.

So, if I leave it up in Oregon for 90 days I can miss out on the sales tax? Would that be because I had registered it in Oregon?

hmmm...

do a seach on this site for "out of state registration" or something...there was a thread posted on this a few weeks ago with lots of good info and links to DMV's website for out of state vehicle registration requirements.... The Seach function is your friend!

Looking for the link now.....here it is...

Thanks, I'd read through the DMV info but hadn't found the bit about how much tax I'd have to pay. The bit about bringing it in after 90 days to avoid the sales tax is what I was wondering about. Not sure if the wait is worth it or not... although it looks like at 19K I'll have to pay about $1600 just in taxes, not including all of the other fees. That sucks.
