buying a car outside california

so i was wondering, what do you need to do if you buy a car outside california and get it shipped here? Do you need to get it smogged over here or what? Any papers you need to fill out or what?

If you're going to claim residence here in CA then I believe you must get the car smogged and registered in CA. Pretty sure that's the rule.

is this to save sales tax? like buying one from oregon (withno sales tax)?

the car must stay in oregon for 60 (or was it 90 days) then you must fill out paperwork and pay a fee to the state...

It's 90 days, and it doesn't have to stay in OR, it just has to be owned by the owner for 90 days or more. The reasoning there is that if they have had it 90 days, they should not have to pay sales tax on an item that they have already owned for a while...

Yes it doesn't have to stay in that state, but it has to be registered under that state for 90days or else a fee will have to be paid.

You will have to smog it thought, does not matter if it's new or old. Registering it is easy, just go to the dmv, present them w/ the original state registration and plates if any, then get the CA registration. Pretty easy when I did it from Washington state to CA.
