Burning DVD video + data
Okay... here's a message I sent to Nero's tech support. I suspect I might get faster (and more accurate) help from a few of the gurus here on I-club. If you have any ideas I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks, Joe

Hi,
Windows 2000 service pack 4
1.4 GHz Athlon processor
Pioneer A06 DVD burner (firmware version 1.05)
Nero Express 5.5.10.32
ULead Pictureshow 2.0 se
What I'm trying to do:
Burn a DVD that contains both a slideshow of pictures that can be played on consumer DVD players, and data to go along with it.
The problem:
When I burn a DVD with Nero Express the video portion of the DVD does not work on consumer DVD players. When burning I have compatibility mode checked, as well as finalize disc checked. I am burning at 4x (I tried 2x but that didn't help). I am verifying the data after burning the disc and Nero always reports back a good burn.
My theories:
I suspect this is a software issue with Nero Express as when I burn a DVD directly from my slideshow authoring application (ULead Pictureshow 2.0se) it works perfectly fine on stand-alone consumer DVD players (specifically a Toshiba SD2200 and a Microsoft X-Box). When I do the same with Nero Express the video will playback on my PC but it will not play on a stand-alone consumer DVD player (fails on both the Toshiba SD2200 and the X-Box).
It appears as if Pictureshow is simply writing the AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS folders to the DVD, there doesn't seem to be anything else that's special as far as I can tell. Why does writing those folders to DVD work with Pictureshow, and fail to work (again, on a consumer stand-alone DVD player) when using Nero Express?
Thanks, Joe

did you compare the contents of the folders of the 2 disks?
did you update your nero?
wait... can nero express burn that, a dvd spec'ed dvd? or can it only do DATA dvd's...
kinda like my roxio will only do DATA dvd's.
if i need to make a dvd to be view like a regular movie dvd, i have to use a program (my DVD) to AUTHOR one...

Is the firmware for your burner updated to work with the 4X DVD's?
I know that I had to pitch like 5 disc that I messed up before discovering that little tidbit. They seemed fine on the computer and some would even start playing on the DVD player, but they'd skip and jitter and crap, eventually the DVD didn't even recognize them.
You may be in trouble trying to do both the DVD player compatible video with computer data on the same disc, I think that they might need different directory structures, but I don't know for sure.
And I don't know how Nero is, as I've been suffering with Pinnacle Studio 8, but I can tell you directly from first hand experience that for them, minor revisions and beta patches sometimes address MAJOR bugs and outright faulty code, so I wouldn't be at all surprised if a newer version might address some of your challenges.

One other thing to remember, commercial DVD's have a whole lot more capacity than consumer DVDR- like twice as much, but your point is well taken, there must be some way to partition the file structures or something to cram both types of data on there.
Good luck

That's the function that Pictureshow serves. There are two options, you can burn a disc directly from the application or you can have it output the data that it would write to disc so you can use a burning application to write the data to the disc at a later time. I hate half assed software. Had I known it would suck as bad as it does I would have just bought the OEM drive and bought my own software. The bundled stuff is crap.

here's the thing though, if PICTURESHOW makes the 2 folders (TS_XXXXX), and nero is supposed to burn them ONTO a blank, you are still making just a DATA DVD.
for the one time i did make a dvd that was playable even on my first generation sony dvd changer, i had one software that did everything from assembling all the files, making chapters and then burning the disc itself...
that's why you gotta check whether nero can burn such a disc... in this case dvd = digital VIDEO disc.

Many DVD players won't play DVD-R discs unfortunately. You can play around and see if different file formats will work just for the heck of it. You already tried the DVD format (mpeg-2 or 3), but you can try Vid-CD format. Just a thought. Many of the DVD players that say they will play the video cd's and things like that won't. Mine won't, but my friend's Sony will.

And besides you will never get me to admit that sony is anything less than crap! Nothing burnt plays on my sucky sony dvd/cd player, regardless of recording program or disc type.
sonyYou guys know anything about those $400 DVD copiers at Fry's. They are basically a small box with two disc drives without any inputs outputs. All it does is copy from one disc to the other. I'm figuring that they mkae crap copies, but I wonder if anybody has bought one of those!
