what do you guys think i should do, so basically on tuesday after the UCKK meet when i was driving away i notice that it was grinding in 3rd gear. Not when i shift into 3rd gear, but when its in 3rd. it would make a horrible constant grinding noise. this doesnt happen in any other gears except 3rd. Alex was there and he drove my car and said it might be the gear or the syncros. he recommended that i should drain my tranny fluid first and check if there is any metal shaving. So pretty much do you think i should take it to Santa Cruz subaru(since most ppl say they are pretty friendly). Or i should buy a sti ra gear set. The reason why im thinking about a sti gear set is because it will last alot longer. Plus if i take it to the dealer they are going to ask me for an authorization to tear down the tranny part and if its not covered under warranty they are going to charge me for the amount of the labor plus parts if i want to get it fix. that would cost over 4 grand if not cover by warranty.
So Bay area folks, what do you think i should do?

SO HERE IS THE UPDATE. Apparantly its not covered by my warranty because they found a one inch tooth on the magnet when they drain the fluid. There was also 2 more tooth in the tranny in the case when they opened it. All of them came from 3rd gear. So today i got my car towed from santa cruz to gruppe-s, WAITING FOR THEIR RA GEAR SET
i will also be getting new clutch and flywheel and going catless.
I have heard good and bad things about Exedy Organic Clutch Kit and the ACT HD Street Disc Kit. Which one do you think i should get? also which flywheel should i get with either one of these clutch set up.

AHHH cant wait to get my car back, miss it so badly. Should be getting it back next week though since gruppe-s are getting back the RA gear set tmr from cyro treatment. Everyones talks about how awesome the RA gear set....I cant wait to drive it and see for my self. Anways here are some pics of the broken tranny 3RD gear, enjoy.

haha...see the thing is im scared of taking the risk to take it to a dealer because if they dont cover it under warranty their going to charge me for labor anyways. the amount it would cost to tear the tranny apart and put it back together is around 900 (quoted from the dealer). with that money if i pay a couple more hundred i can get a RA gear set.
Hurray, it's Ian!!

anyways, i took it to the dealership, they found lots of metal shavings so they gave me the dreadful call. i went ahead and gave them permission. i have a my02 wrx, and it turns out there's some sort of plate or something around one of the gears, and that was where all the shavings came from, as well as some 1st and 4th synchros being a bit worn. they also said later car models didn't even have that random metal plate, and that 1st, 3rd, and 4th gear synchros were problematic. so they gave me new synchros and at the same time i changed my tranny fluid too (this all happened around 45-50K miles on my car so it was due for a fluid change soon anyways.
everything was taken care of under warranty. turboback + uppipe didn't matter as it has no relation to the tranny.

I bought my car at SC subaru so that might have something to do with it.
But my car had a tranny problem in the mid 30k range and i took it in to them. No questions. they popped it open found a stuck syncro and repaired it.
I was never asked for a credit car type deal incase it was my fault.
At the time my car was stock though.

so i took my car to santa cruz dealer this afternoon. The mechanic said that something is broken that why its grinding on 3rd gear. he something about the clip thats holding the gear in place is broken so its rubbing against something. So their going to tear the tranny apart and if they dont find any big metal chunk then it should be covered by the warranty. He also notice that 1st gear is grinding really badly too, that means if everything from normal wear and tear their going to be replacing 1st, 3rd and 4th gear. The advisor who i talked to said there is an update on 1st, 3rd, and 4th for older model wrx. thats another reason why he said it should be covered under warranty because the old ones were designed poorly.
