I have had to deal with a similar situation with my car as well. My turbo started to fail slowly and I had smoke out the tailpipe at idle and at freeway speeds plus my car started to run really really rough. Eventually the bushing in the turbo gave way completely and sent chunks of itself through my engine which caused a catastrophic failure. Granted my issues popped up at around 80k miles, but defects happen and brand new parts can fail.
Smoking out the tail is a instant red flag, I agree with FXTbrah to take off your DP and check for shaft play in the turbo. Also, if there is a coating of oil or coolant inside the exhaust side of your turbo or in your downpipe, that is an indication the bushings/bearings are going out and your turbo should be replaced soon, before it causes more damage to your engine.

i havent really had any big oil burnoffs like i had with my first TD04(ive been on TOP of all my oil changes with this one though..) but i have had a little smoking here and there i guess thinking back..oddly enough.. last night it threw a CEL for the first time in a longggg time(p0171 too lean code) which i cleared and it hasnt returned today.. DAM was at 16 and no signs of pulled timing/knock on my AP, i assume which had to do with some of my odd A/F ratios recently and some other assumptions i had
may i ask, did your car run worse after a cold start/sitting before your oil(and turbo) were completely warm? and did your turbo continue to make even more pronounced rattling/scratching noise after sitting for a while cold, but improve while you start driving etc.. any more help is much appreciated good sir

So after letting her warm up and driving to foothill I was sitting parked and noticed I had some white smoke puffing out of the tail.. Thought it was just me being catless/cold morning but this was after driving around... Coincidence? Or turbo is on its way..

I see you are going into GST. If your TD04 is blown, and you are planning on a turbo upgrade I have a TD04 sitting in my garage I can let you use till you can afford the turbo you want. I will be there tomorrow and can bring it in there.

Ok my appointment is at 9am so I will bring it there and leave it for you. It has like 110k miles on it but it worked great when I took it off. If you need it and want to keep it maybe you can shoot me a c note later on down the road, if you just want to borrow it till you get a new turbo that will be free of charge. I am sending you a PM.

Christ thanks for the info sorry to hear.. yeah funny enough today i considered the turbo more and i realize it could definitely be a possibility, turbo did sit for a while off of its original car and then it got thrown onto my catless headerback with a potentially leaking turbo inlet

My car actually didn't throw any CEL's or really have any rough starts until the last few times i started it before...kaboom. It ran fine for the most part and boosted ok, but i first started to notice a problem when I was stopped at a red light and white puffs of smoke would blow past my window from behind, similar to what you describe below.
Then, one day on my way home from work my CEL comes on and the car starts running rough. I babied it home, and by the time I pulled in my driveway the whole engine was shaking and rattling bad. That was the end, it only started (kind of) one time after that.

lol, yea it's been awhile eh.
I never really disappeared completely, was always quietly lurking in the shadows.
I'm happy to see a lot of the old schoolers are still around.
I'm also sad to hear about those of us who we've lost over the past few years. Be careful out there people.

For me, the smoking just got worse and worse over time until my car was like the ultimate Spy Hunter smoke screen machine, and looked good doing it too!

and now for yesterdays update.. while cleaning out the MAF sensor/checking intake for oil I found out the inner tabs on my airbox were barely broken off and its obviously not sitting 100% flush.. upon cleaning the MAF sensor(which definitely had some residue on it.. from my now repaired leaking PVC probably) i fired her up and now running super rich to the point of bogging/almost stalling on me at red lights lol.. however one piece of duct tape to seal the airbox and she drives normal out of higher boost once again, no pulled timing, no knock
such a mind**** so I do think I know whats going on now ffs.. gonna pick up a new o2 sensor(which i presume is out of commish and causing the p0171 code) from carlsen and replace that with the DP off while scheckin out the turbo, and hopefully ill have some answers this weekend

Good luck. Sounds like a bunch of things. I am in the same boat...bunch of stuff came up when I took it in yesterday to find out where that burnt oil smell is coming from.
