I freak out when I don't change it after 4,000... This is very sad.

I have to chime in here -

First off, that's ugly... really ugly. I wonder if the guy was running with the oil cap off, or with no air filter.

That said, there are a few oil companies that spec a 20K mile oil change. Amsoil comes to mind. International Harvester 4300's have a factory oil change spec of 15K and believe me, diesels get dirtier than gas engines. With modern synthetic oils the days of the 3000 mile oil change are really over in most cases.

They were concerned that ATF is too aggressive of a solvent and could cause microleaks in the gaskets.

Supposedly AutoRX is supposed to work much slower and therefore be safer to the seals. Regardless of the choice, it is supposedly running, apparently pretty well, and the guy is extremely lucky it didn't do any damage.

If they were so concerned about that engine, they wouldn't have ran it for 60k miles without an oil change!

Mixing a quart of ATF in with the engine oil and letting it idle for 10mins then flushing it out isn't going to cause any "microleaks" in the gaskets.

The OP on bimmerforums declined to answer someone's question regarding the reason for this occurrence which makes me worry that it might NOT have been a scientific experiment

Your engine oil is like your underwear: it's going to get dirty before it gets "worn out" and that's why you change it... the difference is you can't put your engine oil in a washing machine.

That's pretty damn nasty... but at least there was actually oil left in it after 60k! Try that with an STI and see how long it lasts before it runs out completely and seizes up

I think I saw that he said he topped it off occasionally. Also, my WRX doesn't burn any oil (hopes I didn't just jinx it)

Who and why would you NOT change the oil for that long? That's like me investing in a 40-50k car and get a new engine every 30k, talk about a douche.

they seriously say 15K OR 1 year? That makes even less sense, theres nothing at all about oil, especially synthetic, that makes it go bad in a year.

So if I have a BMW that put a 2K miles on in one year its time for a change but if I have a BMW that I put 12K miles on in 2 months Im good for another 10 months or 3K miles??

I'm guessing he didn't use his turn signal in 60k+ miles either
