Taking it easy in the snow in a Suby is like telling a fish in the ocean to chill on the swimming. Snow tires are the single best investment in car parts that I've ever made. It's seriously like night and day. Just get an extra set of rims to put the snow tires on. I just swap them out Friday afternoon before the drive up and swap 'em back Monday morning. It's not too bad and definitely worth the extra effort. I've driven the snow tires on dry pavement and it's no picnic. They're soft and you feel like you're destroying the tires on every turn. If I actually lived up in the snow I'd have a set of studded snows, but living here in the Bay, snow tires on a second set of rims is a blessing. Mine are Blizzak's FWIW.

The Nokian WR is their all-season tire which still has the severe snow service rating (the mountain symbol with the snowflake in it). I run a set on my Forester XT pretty much year-round (225/55/17), and they're working/wearing well. Took them up to Tahoe a couple times and Kirkwood once last year during snowfall with no problems. You will give up handling with a dedicated snow tire or tire like the WR, but that's what my other car is for.

i have gone 3 seasons on my blizzaks about 4 times back and forth every season from santa rosa - heavenly, no problems, i have only noticed minimal wear.

 

I agree with Brian, get another set of rims. I have driven on Bridgstone Blizzaks - when I did a winter driving school in Steamboat Springs CO. We were using 2wd Toyota Camry's with Blizzaks on a snow and ice road course. Those tires stopped the car on a dime.

thats good to know, ive used mine once and on the pavement i was speeding there pretty hard, on high 50/ 88 doing good speeds. Is that going to smoke my tires?

well, I'd be going this weekend with some friends if I wasn't going to the 25-hour. I don't think snow tires are needed up there yet, but I'll be glad to have 'em in the garage if I decide I need em.

I'll wait until there's at least another foot or two of snow before I'd go out and sacrifice my skis to the rock gods.
