big problem helpp =(
yea..i just got home from a 10 minute drive and i noticed at a signal, there was like burning smoke that really stunk coming from my hood scoop. when i got home i opened the hood and A Lot of burning smoke came out. i checked the oil, and it so happens that it was almost completely DRY. i just changed my oil recently maybe like 300-400 miles ago. ive never spotted oil leaking on the ground before, so maybe this could be my oil burning up.. does anyone have any clue what could be causing this? think my rings are fried..
hope warrenty could help me on this =/
btw i have a 04 wrx with around 15k miles.
ide really appreciate it if sumone could help me out figure out what this could be.
Thanks a lott.

If it was rings you'd feel it in the lack of power.
I think you must have a pretty major leak, maybe in the turbo oil lines, put more oil in and see where its coming out- or get it to a shop.
But just because the dipsticjk doesn't show oil doesn't mean its dry- if you're down more than about a quart the dipstick doesn't find any, so its probably not as bad as you think.
Thats my advice,
for what its worth.

Yeah, it sounds like a hose or something is leaking oil. Can you tell where
the smoke is coming from? If your still under warranty, take it to the
dealer for sure. If not or you cant, then do what psoper suggested, put
in more oil and try to find the source.

if it's comming from under the hood, it's not so bad - means you are leaking oil, my guess is the turbo oil feed line, onto the hot engine. Just keep pouring oil in it until you get it to a dealer.
When the car is cold, can you see dried oil anywhere? it could also be comming from a poorly installed or leaking oil drain plug.

ok i just went outside and yea the oil seems to be leaking on the ground everywhere. i cant tell where its coming from though cause everything is wet all around the area like the oil exploded or something. the leak possibly could be coming from the one time i was jacking up by car in the front and the jack slipped onto the metal oil container holder thing- yea im bad at names. it put a ding into it but it really didnt seem like anything to make the oil penetrate through. think i should call subaru for warranty help? (not sure if itll work? i have my undertray thing off, and also my u-frame piece off also) which defeats the purpose of saying like a rock hit it or sumthing while driving/, or any idea where i should take my car to? hah even though i dun even know the exact leaking problem yet.
How soon after the "jack slip incident" did you notice the burning
smoke? Take some rags or newspaper and wipe down as much of
the oil as you can, then put in more and see if you can figure out where
it's coming from. Short of that any reasonable mechanic should be
able to (for $60) tell where the oil is coming from. If you dented your
oil pan you probably can't get it covered under warranty, but who knows.
Driving around without oil is bad bad bad. Get it checked out as soon
as you can.

Same thing happened to my 03 wrx a month back. Clear smoke from under the hood. Brought it into the dealership just in time for the 30K major. They found some cap or whatnot came loose and was letting the oil leak out. It was covered under the 30K major.
Funny thing is, I also had my oil changed, at JiffyLube. Maybe they're not familiar with Subarus or something, huh? Good luck.

I actually had a bad oil filter gasket one time. You should check the oil filter area and the drain pug... are you sure you didn't accidentally double up the washers?

dented oilpans can not only cause leaks around the perimeter of the pan, but if the dent blocks the oil pickup for the oil pump, the pump won't be able to suck up enough oil to keep steady oil pressure, and that is bad for teh motor.
I'd have your engine compartment, top & bottom, steam cleaned, then add UV dye to your oil, fill it up (cold and on a flat surface.
Borrow a buddy's blacklight and check under there in a couple days, the dye will glow, and you'll be able to see where you're leaking.
Good Luck,
David

oh yeah forgot to mention that the drain plug on '04+ (maybe '02-03), comes with its crush washer glued to it.
I've seen people add another crush washer, not realizing that the old one is painted onto the drain plug.
Also, I highly recommend the factory oil filters and crush washers. I've seen auto parts stores selling/giving cheesy paper crush washers, and they are worthless.
