Big camping trip...need advice/suggestions
on roof racks.
I'm heading up to Portland and Seattle in 3 weeks and I'm gonna stop by Redwoods and Mt. Ranier. I would really like to take my WRX instead of my pick-up cause it's so much nicer.
Total of 3 people, so I need to fit gear for all 3 people PLUS 3 mountain bikes. I'm not too worried about the gear, cause I cram into the back of the wagon (buh-bye subwoofer
)....but anybody got any ideas on fitting 3 bikes on the roof? Which rack should I go with ...factory, yakima, thule? howabout a loadwarrior...then just disassembling the bikes and loading it that way? or are there any crossbars that fit the wagon rails, but will accomodate 3 bikes?

pick whatever rack you want, more importantly:
I would definately bring along a handgun, and/or a compact shotgun with a pistol grip.
For the "intimidation factor", not many beat the trusty .357 magnum revolver, with a 4 or 6 inch barrel.
Personally, I carry a Walther P99 semi-automatic pistol, chambered in .40 cal.

a handgun for a camping trip?
i know there are wackos out there, but is it necessary?
anyhow, you can fit an extra bike carrier in the middle of the typical "two bike" rack. for example, i can just buy another viper bike carrier to put on my yakima rack, making it capable of carrying three bikes.

Son, I have the Subaru factory bike rack that fits the wagon crossbars, if you want to borrow it. It only holds two bikes, so you'll have to either buy another yakima mount, or figure out something else for the third bike.

Let me know,

Go with yakima man.
my rack can take 4 bikes.
If you end up buying it and don't want to buy 3 sleds let me know. You can borrow one of mine. My racks won't be going back on until winter and bikes won't go back on until like....may of next year.

I know either yakima or thule have a in-bed bike rack, cause I use to work for tri-city sporting good... but anyway.... if u lookin for a rear rack, go with yakima...but if somehow u like a roof rack for ur other car...get thule...alot stronger and better hold then the yakima...
rear rack - yakima
roof rack - thule ( that include snowboard rack also... they are better.)

I have all this crap.....haaaa
2 48" bars
2 wind fairings
4 q towers
4 wagon towers
2 viper bike racks
2 copper head bike racks
1 lift ticket 6
bunch of locks
I can carry up to 4 bikes. 4 snowboards or 6 skiis. all the gear for 4 people and still spin donuts...haaaa.
if you look at my gallery there are a couple photos of my car in the snow...my racks are on.
I love my yakima....when I had my civic I had my hard tail with dual crown and discs and my brothers santa cruz fully on top and did about 115mph with them up there...no problems. Done curvy roads. Even left my bike locked up there over night once...forgot about it..haa. but the things are secure...specially if you have an alarm. Because with all the jerking they have to do to get the bike off they set the alarm off.
I looked at so many rack combinations before I bought..yakima is the best..hands down. so many combinations...so easy to get parts for it....plus the subaru racks that you buy are yakima so if you choose you can get accessories or parts at the dealership.

but remember the mtn bikers that were attacked by mountain lions?
granted it would be illegal to bike and carry a concealed loaded weapon.
i take mine out with me WHENEVER i go camping. i also carry a magazine loaded with shot shell ammo in case snakes gets too close and they wont leave on their own.
and then of course there's the BLAIR WITCH PROJECT scenario...
