Best Tire for the Bay Area?

Being brand spanken new to the Bay Area I thought I would throw this question out there for you long time residents. After picking up a nail in one of my Potenza RE050A Pole Positions and driving around on an odd tire its time to do something.

I have two options get a heat treated, shaved tire to match or replace them all.

If I replace them I only have a few tires I'm willing to chose from:
1. The Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3's. I ran these when I was living in Hawaii and liked them a lot.
2. Michelin Pilot Sport PS2. Got to drive a Z3 with these on and liked how they gripped.
3. Potenza RE-01R. I have heard good things about this tire but would like some opinions.
4. g-Force T/A KDW(1 or 2). Worth trying?

There will be some occasional dirt road driving.

I have separate rims for race rubber and winter tires.

Thanks.

As long as there is some life left in your set of RE050a's=Match. And forget the heat cycling... it's not necessary on a street tire (especially a street driven tire).

Oh, and KDW's are nowhere near as good as the other tires on your list (except in treadwear, lol).

I like my RE050As. They also felt great in the wet.. in a few months it'll be raining non-stop, so you'll appreciate that.

I second the PZero, not because of the ratings the tire company gives it though. They're great in the dry for daily driving, and I think they're amazing in the rain. Only negative I have with them, is that they tramline towards the end of their life.

From my experiences, stay away from the RE960s. Brand new tire from Bridgestone that's getting great reviews on tirerack. I was told they're competition to the PS2, but, after picking a set up (I forgot to order a set of PZeros from my old manager at America's Tire Co, and these were the only decent set in the 225/50/16 size I get) I fully regret it. I was hoping it was just the primary rubber needing to be burned off, but even after a few thousand miles, these tires still don't grip anywhere near as well as the PZeros. I have very little confidence in these tires and I can feel my car struggling to grip and turn what was easy turns in the PZeros. Under heavy braking, the tires lock up really early too, luckily they grip enough for me to have avoided 2 major accidents from people thinking they can accelerate from 50 to 80 in 2 seconds.

p zero is horrible in the dry, the pilot sport ps2 is just as good as p zero in the wet.

p zero is too all season....poopy..................i say get pilot sport ps2 if you are looking for ride, re01r if you are looking for a little less comfort but better dry grip, little cheaper buttttt wear out faster than ps2. Thats my opinion anyway.

RE050a PP is just about as good as the PS2 though, Id take it over the PS2 actually its got better sidewalls and the grip is on par...

I dont want to intrude on the thread too much, but i have a similar question. Ill be needing new tires soon, and i was thinking of going with the re960s. I need some sort of tire that can handle decent in the snow and in the rain being that ill be going up to tahoe a lot this year and i cant afford snow/winter tires. So basically i need something with decent snow traction, wet traction and obviously dry on 16 inch wheels (215 preferable)

The RE050a has been a good tire. It corners well, handles well in the wet. However they are easier to break loose at the line than the GS-D3's(my current favorite tire, especially driving in Hawaii and Seattle in a lot of rain) were, and despite not having a snow rating worked alright in a freak Montana snow storm this May.

I appreciate the responses so far. Look forward to getting together with some fellow i-clubers soon. Haven't really done anything since I left HIIC

No worries, I trust that you've been to the tire rack and gone through the Tire Decision Guide. From there it all depends on your budget.

Given your need to drive in deep snow conditions I think that the 960's will be best suited for all conditions.

In the winter I drive a set of Blizzack LM-22's 205/55/16's. The narrower tire works better in the deeper snow. This is my 4th and last winter with them and I'm really happy with their performance.

Another opinion...

Try the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S tires. They grip very well in the dry AND in the wet. I've never found another tire that does it all quite so well...except for the snow.
