What about the kindle fire HD. They're like $140 right now?

I need to get something for my wife. She'll basically be going on the internet and reading her school books on it. Maybe watching netflix. Maybe plug it in to the big tv. WiFi only.

Looks like the 16gb is only $30 more. Probably worth it. Can still use the slot to go bigger.

Kindles are nice if you are just going to do reading, and mild use of internet and email. Other than that the OS that is loaded on the Kindles are very restrictive, and its main functions are as mentioned, which is why they are inexpensive in my opinion.

I'll probably wait until closer to christmas and pick one up for the wife.

Was just looking at the Galaxy 8 and the Nexus 7.

That's the top end of the price spectrum I'd be looking at. $150-300. It's really so she can have something on the go to do her homework with. Our laptop is a POS and I use it for work. At home she can use the PC or I want her to be able to plug in to the TV and chill and do it.

I'll probably jack it to read books in bed or watch netflix when the wife/daughter are on the tv's.

Probably better off with the Nexus or samsung then.

Could also go Ipad mini but I'd have to come up on a deal. Wife loves her iphone but I want something larger and a standard iPad is just too much for what we can do right now.

Essentially... her school books run us like $200+ a semester and she can get them digitally for $50 or less. So a couple semesters can pay for the tablet.

Her online school stuff has to function as well so I think it'll need more online ability than the Kindle... I guess.

I'll second this for a purchase for the wife. I bought my wife an original Kindle Fire when they came out last year or the year before. She's loved it and so has my daughter (an added bonus). Aside from the slightly restrictive OS, it's great for exactly what you described. Reading books, Netflix, Amazon Prime, HBO Go, etc.
