...and how long does it take for this to happen:
"The ECU will also bring timing advance back up once conditions change"
because on the stock ecu, it took a tank of gas or two to get back to optimal (that's like 600 miles, I don;t want to wait a month to get good performance if I get stuck w/ a bad tank of gas).
thanks.

Jeremy let me know when you get yours, i'd love to see what your brewing...
I should be getting mine any day now as well, and that means i FINALLY get to strap in the SR50!
Jeremy do you have any ideas for tuners? Also when are you strapping in all the goodies i heard you were thinking about?
Also for what it is wort, the guy i get my parts from knows Nathan and all the XS guys, (he is actually visiting them now getting an update on my UTEC...
) and i've been discussing the Ecutek vs. UTEC thing for months now... he says that the STi UTEC is unlike any UTEC they have made (this may be BS and they are just trying to sell us), but thats why it took so long to come out, because they couldn't simply use the WRX UTEC and adapt it to use on an STi, they had to redo practically everything. He said that most of the issues that most people talk about with UTEC were dealt with when they were making the STi version of it.
When all of you talk about UTEC, are we talking about UTEC (old style WRX), or are we talking about UTEC (STi) because there apparently is a HUGE difference (according the the XS guys...

It deffinately shouldn't take a tank of gas or two to bring back timing. From past experience it only takes 3-4 WOT 3rd gear runs to bring back most of the timing. If the ECU is really stuck from some horrible gas (not likely to happen), you can always reset it, to let it re-learn quickly.

It pretty much comes down to what you want to do with your car. If you want to have it tuned and don't feel like playing with it. Get the EcuTek. If you are the type of person that can't keep your setup on you car the same for more than a month and like to play around with everything. Get a UTEC.
Just remember to use the highest quality gas you can find locally (76 = teh best IMO) so that you will have that little bit of safety from gas station to gas station.

Thanks for the info guys. This has been a very informative discussion.
Hey, let's keep this to the wrx UTEC, to avoid confusion.
...still don;t know how the reflash folks pass smog. I guess I should do a search or start a differentt thread.

It isn't really necessary to reflash to stock to pass smog. As long as there are no CEL's, you should be fine. The smog tests don't test WOT, part throttle operation and emmissions shouldn't be too different with a propperly tuned reflash.

Most modifications will fail visual right away... anything other than a catback in fact, so the engine management is the least of your worries. Atleast you can drive in with a well running car and hope the guy's not a stickler for visual. If you want to take off all the mods, then I suppose you could get the ecu flashed back to stock for the inspection as well... or just borrow one from a friend.

I think the difference between the regular and STI UTEC is being a bit overstated, the STI does indeed have a few extra features that the regular UTEC doesnt have, but they both tune fule/air/ignition in the same fasion and there would be very little practical reason for TurboXS to make 2 completely different engine management systems just because of the STI, anyone that has used a regular UTEC should be able to use an STI UTEC

ANd oh yeah, Im getting a twin scroll setup on mine, its no SR50 but the SPOOOOOOOOOLL!!!!
