Bay Area Rollcage Fabrication?
Hey Everyone,
Well the time is slowly coming for some steel tubes to go into the car...problem being, I am not sure in what pattern they should be equiped inside the car.
Basic math tells us to make a lot of triangles, but I'd rather pay a shop to come up with a design that'll save my life, rather than saving some cash.
Anyone know of any local (or the rest of CA) that has experience with WRX rollcages?
Bolt in is not an option...neither are pre-fab'd

why for?
It entirely depends on what you want to put the cage in there for.
For SCCA rally you need to have your cage built to their rather stringent requirements- they explicitly specify tubing wall thickness, diameter, mouting and gussetting, and it all has to be by the book or you don't get to play.
Cage design may have its foundation in "basic math" but in reality it's pretty high science to design and fab one to comply with today's safety regulations
Other sanctioning bodies have their own specific requirements, so if I were you, I would figure out where you want to play and make sure that the design and implementation you select for your cage work meets those needs.
I understand why bolt-in is not desirable, but there are some pretty decent cage kits available- from primative racing and others, in which case the design and material aquisition is done and you only need to find a qualified welder, rather than a full cage design and fabrication shop, so I wouldn't entirely rule out a somewhat pre-fab'd solution, provided it's engineered right.
As for who around here to do it?- again that is going to depend on what path you choose, but there are several shops around here that should be able to do the job-
But first you need to do your homework, the last thing you want to do is spend a couple grand on tubing and welding and not have the results meet your needs.

SJwrx - Paul is pretty much dead on in his above post but if you still find nothing you like we have IMHO the best fabricator on the west coast next door to us and he makes some of the best rollcages and so on for compitition vehicles I have seen. If you would like an introduction let us know.

Talk to Craig Hill, owner. Referred by "Arkady/Racer X"
They do amazing, quality work...just look inside their shop, they build cars for the NASCAR Southwest Series, insane NHRA drag & funny cars, as well as Shelby Cobras & custom Superformance Cobra replicas.
They built my friend Arkady a 500whp street legal road-racing '89 Mustang GT (w/Vortech A-trim & DSS 306ci block), used to hit about 170mph on Bear Creek Road (err, racetrack!). Car was so fast, reliable, and clean...

For SCCA rally, I bought my cage from Primitive (Paul Eklund), and had it welded in by Craig Hill. Someone else you might talk to is Gordy (the bearded welding genius next door to MPJ).

Also, I know of a really great, reputable race car fabrication shop, that does excellent work in San Jose/santa clara/sunnyvale/campell area somewhere.....
They are called "Magnum Force" Fully custom roll cages....I know someone that had a full tube frame built by them for a drag car he was building....the complete chassis, looked immaculate, excellent workmanship, and precision welds....Plus I looked into having them build me a cage for my truck....and they had some pretty decent prices considering the amount of work they were doing.

Roll bars and cages page
Also, here is another place, called "Chris Alston's Chassisworks" up in Sacto.....
Chris Alston's Chassisworks
.PDF file that tells you how to measure your car for your own custom rollcages.
hope this helps....good luck.....
