Hmmm....

OzoneBilliards has stuff. I couldn't really make you a recommendation. My bro's first cue was a Players cue. The next one was a $150 custom cue. Auderick or something. It looks really nice, too. Now he is shooting with a $300 custom sneaky Pete.

I am looking at cues on the site. Maybe spend a few bucks more and go from the Players and Action cues to the Mcdermott's.

I guess it really depends on how much you think you'll be playing and/or how serious you are. I am sure someone like Roo or Ballz could give you a better idea on what type of cues to get.

A little OT: Why the hell are the Sledgehammers so expensive? Those used to be like $200 on EBay, brand new.

My first few cues were all McDermott cues. I developed a liking for their hit and feel. After I started getting better and being able to play call-shot instead of call-pocket, and started learning banks and straight pool, I learned that production equipment wasn't all that it was cracked up to be.

I noticed a lot of my friends and opponents were having cues made for them to spec, and with the weight and balance point being chosen by them, not the manufacturer, they were able to control the cue ball much better. I then purchased my first custom cue from a cuemaker who learned under the master Burt Schrager. From that point onward, I honed my skills some, and worked hard to come up with the money to purchase a rather nicely made custom cue. I played with several different cues before deciding whose cues had the best hit/feel for me, and wound up passing by several rather great cuemakers to come to the conclusion that I felt most comfortable with a PFD Studios cue.

Paul Drexler made a custom cue specifically to my specs, weight, balance point, wood type, wrap type/color, joint type, shaft material, ferrule material and finish.

I've run several racks with this cue...

...but you're not going to find one very cheap now. His cues start ~900 or more...

I have a pool Brunswick pool table with a bunch of Brunswick cues, after a while of playing I got a Mizerak Cue and it is really nice, I got it for ~$50 at big 5, I also got a Minnesota Fats cue from my RA in college, a good friend of mine also got his own cue and he insists that Cuetec is the best...

Try looking into a McDermott or just a plain sneaky pete. Since you are kinda starting out go with a 20 to 21oz. That will help you shoot as it's balanced better for a beginner. As your arm gets more used to shooting and you learn better English on the cue ball you can eventually go to a lighter cue of around 18 to 19oz. It really just depends on how you feel and how fast you learn the game.

You might want to check out http://www.mueller-sporting-goods.com They have a really good selection of cues and what not.

I have a 17oz Joss West that's about as old as I am. I don't really pull it out much these days. I can pretty much use a crappy bar cue or even the end of a broom stick.

Roo, we still gotta hook up one of these days.

I'm glad he's found a cue that allows him to shoot well, and makes him happy. I know I have. I still have my McDermott cue (after 18 years), and it's going in for a complete restoration (to McDermott) rather soon.
