I'd say NO to OEM, I swear by Optima's but they are expensive and others are out there that do the job OK.

But the OEM ones pretty much suk.

i'm surprised that the oem batt on my STi has lasted this long... (july 03).

anyways, installed a 300 watt system in there a month later and been hammering on it for a while now.

granted, i dont listen to the system with the engine off, but still...

but yes, when the batt does die, a red top optima will go in there. been an optima user since early 90s and i swear by them...

Go to Sears. Tell them you want a new battery. They have Optimas there. I dont think it really matters tho. Is this your first car?

If you have at least a decent aftermarket stereo system installed, get the Optima Yellow Top (and if you have a WRX, install an STi 90amp alternator)

Stock stereo = Optima Red Top

old thread, I know

but does just an upgraded stereo head unit fall under stock stereo? I'm guessing yes

while we're on the topic of that stuff, how much does an STi 90amp alternator cost? and how easy is install? i heard not to get the yellowtop because WRX alternator can't charge it enough, but i'm guessing it will be able to with the 90amp alternator?

I can't tell you how many people have told me all kinds of crap why I shouldn't have a yellow top battery - yet I've had one in my WRX for 4 years (the OEM one didn't last a year and a half) and my ex still has the one in her Forester that I bought before the Alcan Rally in 2000.

Neither rig has any upgrades to the alternator and neither has failed to start- even after sitting out overnight in 40 deg below zero trips above the Arctic circle.

that helps a lot actually. you're the only one who's told me otherwise, and I think the only one who has actually had one in their WRX (that told me not to get yellow-top)

My understanding is that the Braille battery is smaller and lighter than our stock batteries, but has the same or similar cold cranking amp rating and charge capacity.

This is mainly of benefit for racing, where being small and light weight is the greatest advantage.
