Don't buy one from a pet store (Petsmart, Petco, etc.) They are the equivalent to puppy mills and the birds usually have some sort of disease. Petco recently had this problem. As far as finding a reputable breeder, pick up a bird magazine. In the back there are classifieds and websites that can help you narrow your search.

Try the San Jose Mercury, there's usually a ton there from good breeders.

I got mine from this breeder. African Grey needs a lot of attention. Think carefully before you buy them. This breeder will help you to choose parrot. send her an email

birds are definitely something you have to know you definitely not. If your thought process is "oh that'd be a cool pet to have." move on. Birds live a long time, are annoying, smell, can be mean. It isn't uncommon for birds to latch on to one person and be very territorial and mean to other people.

That being said. NEVER get any kind of real pet from a pet store. Deal with reputable breeders. These are breeders that know what they are doing and are not your typical backyard breeders.

thats kind of a tip off NOT to get one unless everyone is 100% on board

sadly, I've seen a lot of people with dogs, but that doesn't mean that they know how to properly take care of them. Any kind of animal is a very large undertaking
