Check teh head gasket on the BMW. When they stated popping things in the cooling system. It can be a telltail sign of the cracked cylinder head. Hope it is not.

We just had it smogged and all compression is good. Would that be a sign that there is no crack?

Don't worry, as soon as she's done learning how to drive, I'm snatching it back

Aren't the MKIV's super popular? MKIII's I didn't think were as hard to find. But its just nice driving around with the top off in an oldschool japanese car.

Oh and the problem ended up being just a timing belt. Replacing water pump and oil seal while at it.
