Cool

Forget those, I rather build into a hillside and be more earth friendly. You get good weather year round since the earth is providing good shelter from the elemetns and the earth provides heat as well. Plus you sustain life on your roof as well, hell you can grow your own food on your roof and help out mother earth

Not that I am the greenest person on i-club but I think as long as the cost of energy and water are somewhat always climbing a house like this or even a hang out spot would be nice and lw maintainance too. I use to spend my summers in the country side of Mexico in a town called Las Palmas when I was between I say 3 - 8 years old while my parents stayed in Puerto Vallarta catering tothe gringo's. We had no running water or electricity and the homes were made out of mud/abode. I still remember to this day watcing my aunts and uncles do their daily things they had to do. Also how much fun I had in the nearby creek and irrigation ponds. I feel sometimes we in the U.S. take so many things for granted. Sorry for my ranting on, I am still kinda effed up from my last percocets And for some reason I got a little carried away.

x2 for building into natural terrain. even better if there was a geothermal heating/cooling setup. or run a system off propane.

i might have said before, my house is on a 20'-30' hill, and the concrete basement is underground on one side, and has an exterior wall on the other, and its always 55-75 degrees in there. So nice on a 90' day, go into a natural 75' basement.

Amazing how that works.

Same with my house. Best place to be during the summer. It's basically a 450sf hang out room. haaaa.

Kyle, the progression of your threads worries me. Soundproofing rooms? Backyard "getaways"? Combine those with the Deliverance-esque photos on facebook....

haha, our old house was like that. Nice and cool in the summer when it'd get up near the hundreds outside! It was great too because the exposed wall faced north/northwest so the sun didn't hit it until late afternoon. The problem was though, that in January of '08 it flooded due to the rain soaking the ground. In January '09 (right before we moved out) the hot water heater decided to leak, and the idiot that designed the house put the hot water heater right uphill from the garage and downstairs room, so where do you think all that water went?

I love my basement! It is nice and cool in the summer time, and it is split into two sides that make up a large L. On one side we do dirtbikes and go-peds and the other side we do woodwork, and car stuff. Well we use to do dirtbike stuff before I had to stop riding and sell my bike Anyways we also have a deck that is uber big and is underneath some Redwood trees with a picninc table and a hammock for when the breeze is out or in the evening for nice dinners outside and chilling with the family
