Autocross options ? i.e. other clubs !
Okay so I know there are SCCA events (been doing them since the 80's) and I know there are more clubs out there doing these events. Do you know the other clubs ?
This is the question that is always asked and I figured starting a thread is better so we can all answer and contribute to the fun filled events and not get stuck on one car club.
Here is how I see it:
SCCA = 3 runs at $30 2 runs if running late/fun runs if ontime)
and all runs under one minute!
Now do you know of any other events other than SCCA that we can participate in ?
Let us all find out our options !!

How about starting a Subaru Auto X event. Sea Dragon Rex runs in a Porsche exclusive one. - That idea is pretty cool.
It may be a lot off work. :\

Anyone know a cool insurance company that will give us an insurance bond to cover the individual events? We can chair an event as we have done em in the past..
GB/MPJ can afford to rent an area where we can do it, but it is the insurance requirements we cannot take "GULP"...

edited for spelling ..lol...

we need current costs and local events and updated schedules , not last years and 2 years ago lol.
.... post when and where not just websites.
This way folks can go and check the actual events and sign up for it not just look at the websites.
Details always helps as we will all be newbies to other clubs...

This is a cool event:
Anyone here done an event with these folks that can guide us?
CSC events in March at the Stockton Fairgrounds, click on the "JOIN US" and get details on how to be a member....

Other options "nearby" are :
American AutoX : "oriented" towards American V8s, but anything is allowed to run. 5 runs, for $35. Courses are wide open and FAST......expect to hit the top of 3rd gear or close at least once on the course! Events are held out in Atwater (about 10 minutes north of Merced, more or less 2 hours from most of the Bay Area). They usually hold their events in pairs, with one event on Saturday and another event on Sunday.
NASAX : has held events in the past, none for 2004.
CSCC : see above
Sac Chapter SCCA : I believe most/all of their events are at Stockton Fairgrounds this year. Ummm, no thanks (for various reasons
)
Fresno Chapter SCCA : not sure what they are up to this year
Reno SCCA : not sure much on them, I'm not driving 600 miles roundtrip for an autocross personally
Being somewhat familiar with the numbers required, let's just say that if you do an "independent" event you can probably expect to either open it up to MANY other cars (thus, limiting your number of runs) or have an entry fee significantly higher than $35. Between site rental and insurance, it is EXPENSIVE to put on an event in the Bay Area! Running the rough numbers in my head, if you can get 100 cars to turn out (which is probably optimistic for a single-make Subaru event in the Bay Area) expect an entry fee of $50-60 just to break even. This is not meant to be discouraging, just realistic.

costs is not an issue as we can expense it and get our distributors to chip in... Insurance costs will kill !!!!! we need an alternative.. Let us all find it
...
100 cars for Subarus is not unreal...lol... SCCA is not the only club out there and yes we can make everyone happy outside SCCA...

For me it has been almost 20 years of SCCA and counting to date and there must be a better club is my point. Break it down and enjoy more laps and not fall into the dreaded 2 runs ever again and a$$wipe power hungry rude folks that organize/chair some events. (I was never one of the rude guys ..lol)......
we can handle the rest....

dahveed : does Shelby club allow non-Shelby cars to run?
Many of the "marque" events in the Bay Area (see Porsche Club, Lotus club, etc) are limited to only cars of that type.

dahveed : if I'm reading that right, they allow only members of the Shelby Club, Tiger Club, and Ferrari club to run. I suspect that will raise the cost of event entry pretty significantly if you have to pay for a club membership
As for the Stockton site, minuses IMHO are the following :
I'm not trying to sound like the major spoilsport here. Just pointing out there are more issues that go into this than most folks realize. Gino pointed out one : the insurance. It isn't cheap, and it isn't easy to get. Also, renting a site isn't as trivial as you think either. Many places and communities get upset when you tell them you are gonna come in and "race cars" at their site unless you're showing them 5 figures of cash for a one-time event (i.e. Mazda Rev It Up, for example, or the Corporate "Test Drive" events.....throw $20-30K at a place and they are a LOT more willing to work with you than the $2-3K that a car club is gonna be able to realistically afford).
For those complaining about Event Chairs at SCCA Events, you're more than welcome to volunteer to do it. You get a free event entry for that day and a free jacket at the end of the year......and trust me, you'll earn every penny of both of them

As for the Stockton site, minuses IMHO are the following :
- Lot is small
- Bumpy Lot
- Not much grip (little better than Golden Gate Fields, but not much)
- In a bad part of town. Pretty much guaranteed that at least once/year, someone will have something stolen (i.e. at minimum tires/wheels, and it has been as bad as entire cars!) out of the paddock. Be careful leaving ANYTHING of value laying around in the paddock at this site!
