Ok, I wasn't gonna say anything but I can't help myself. I am a vegetarian (working on being vegan because the dairy industry just promotes the meat industry) and I don't care if people do or don't eat meat, it's your choice. However, what you have to understand is, even if you treat one set of animals in an inhumane way it promotes the idea that animals are worthless and put solely on the planet for people to do whatever they want to them. I agree that some slaughterhouses do a better job than others, but even if the worst of the worst only happens "sometimes" the fact that it happens ever is ridiculous. Also, animal rights organization are not just concerned with stock animals, but all animals. One of the main goals of these organizations is to stop animal testing, which is done mostly to our beloved dogs, rabbits, cats, and monkeys. And if you don't like PETA, try taking a look at ALF (http://www.animalliberationfront.com/), but they are hard as nails, real "terrorists", they blow **** up. Anyway, just my two cents, take it, leave it, but as consumers, at least know what your purchases are doing to the well being of animals.
members of ALF and ALF itself have been and still are funded by PETA.
Veganism is ludicrous in my opinion. Sorry. I figure everyone is allowed their opinion and their chosen lifestyle but I am RARELY meet true vegans, ones that are doing it for the right reasons and doing it correctly. And being a part of the hardcore/punk scene for about 15 years now I've known and been around a lot. I lived with 3 of them at one point. Not to mention being in santa cruz..haa.
Most of them do it to fit into a social scene, have a movement to support, etc. VERY few do it with proper suplimentation as our bodies are conditioned to eat meat proteins....and even fewer really do it. It's damn near impossible.
and being **** about it is just rediculous. You wouldn't be able to drive, walk or live anywhere. Move to africa and live in a little dirt hut. That's about the only way to truly do it. We walk, drive, sleep, eat, drink, ****, talk, **** using animal products EVERYDAY.
I was a veggie for a while myself.

i've watched many of the PETA videos. I feel for the animals that are murdered like that. That is why I only buy meat from Trader Joes, and a few butchers in Santa Cruz county. Most, if not all of the meats sold there are kosher, or put down quickly and not killed like people in a saw movie.
Though, I don't agree with animal abuse at all and our family is chock full of well-loved animals... (We have 4 Himalayan cats, 1 American Bulldog, 1 Staphi Pit, and 1 Miniature Dachsund, and 1 Guinea Pig).
What would the veggy-folks rather the industries test on? Children? The poor? The homeless? I dont get it. I hate the idea of an animal being hurt for no reason, but, if its to make sure that a medicine wont kill my premature child? SO BE IT. If I'm hungry, the animal will likely lose every time. Granted, we live in the uber-consumer land of opportunity and we are damn lucky to have a choice, but some folks dont. Its meat, or die.
And I promise you if it came down to it, my guinea pig FuManChu would be seasoned well and stuffed in a taco shell.

What I don't get is... How does a hiker that is attacked by a mountain lion or my friend who got bitten by a shark fit into this? Were those animals being unkind or unfair? Were they trerrorists from PETA? NO! They are just animals doing what animals do!!! What about a pack of lions tearing flesh off of a still-live Zebra? That doesn't seem very kosher or kind yet no one is up in arms about it! WTF, over?
We are animals. We are just as unkind to other animals as other animals would be to us. Shoot, I was unkind to a toilet this morning. Where do we draw the lines????
I think people that do as mcdrama said above me here is as good as it gets frankly. Do the best to take part in things you at least are lead to beleive are good, otherwise, yeah - the dirt hut in Africa is the only way to go. And I have met and know a lot of Vegans, never met one who acted or seemed healthy.

haha...I love this post. funny as hell man....and dead on.
I always trip out when people are like...oh a mountain lion ate my cat or attacked my neighbor we must hunt it down and kill it and stuff it.
Hmmmm.....let see.....you live in the mountains. you built this neighborhood in mountain lion country....which not only took some of it's land away but took land from it's prey which decreased how much it has to eat and increases food compitition iwth other animals....hmmm...dog.....looks like meat to me. Not much different than say a baby deer. People can be tricky but still...usually they aren't killed by bears or mountain lions in their back yards or walking down the street...does happen but it's usually when they're hiking or doing some other activity way up in that animals eating grounds.
I saw some program the other day. Chick got stalked and attacked by a bear. it literally ate the back of her head and other parts of her back and what not. She said she did not feel it should be destroyed as it was doing what it does and probably saw her as easy food. She said she should have been more careful.
me.....I'll fight to the death with any animal that tries to eat me....most I'm confident I'd win...some I'd hope they'd leave me alone...some I'd be dinner for. It's life. You go in the wild you risk that. Just like sharks in the sea.
I guess the difference is that we trap them, raise them as food, etc. My only real real beef is with things like force feeding, chemical enhancement and what not. Stuffing a pig in a cage it can't move in, fatting up calves so they can't move but they taste good..etc. the raising for food I don't mind. We can't all hunt our food down and we wouldn't have enough food to eat if we had to as there is less and less land and wild animal space. I'm sure as **** that I'd get shot if I went onto some dudes farm and smoked one of his cows and took off with it.

Either way, it still comes down to "where do you draw the line". You don't eat meat because you don't approve of the organized slaughter of animals, that's fine. But do remember that humans have been just as cruel to other humans. ThinK about what the European settlers did to the natives in order to make this country the way it is today? Are you going to leave this country because of it? I know that's not a 1:1 analogy, but I'm just trying to say, why stop at being a vegan?
This thread is on the razor's edge for being moved to the "Politics" area..lol
I think its really cool that we can all get on here and discuss an issue instead of flaming one another....top knotch guys..

really where it should be.
none the less i love my meat that much more haha.
Well, the only thing I can say is that a lion eats a zebra because that's all it knows. We humans have been given the ability to reason which gives us choices. We can chooce what we eat in the modern world.

The thing is, drawing the line needs to be a very personal thing - finding where your beliefs fit in with your actions (not you specifically of course). Like religion, one (say a vegetarian) should not try to push their beliefs on another (say a meat eater) and vice versa - these are personal decisions since there is no definitive and factual or agreed upon "write and wrong" here per se.
To someone that sees it as black and white - meat = bad and veggies = good, what happens when we find out years from now that plants have hopes, dreams and feelings? There really isn't anything (that I can think of) that can be eaten that is not at the expense of that "thing" and it's life. I sat there racking my brain trying to think of something we can eat that will sustain life, that does not come at the expense of another living organism.
I am also enjoying this discussion.
Cheers everyone!!

A few years back we had chickens for a summer. their hutch was outside on the deck, near the BBQ, and I remember the first night we had them we had BBQ chicken for dinner (no, not the baby chicks, it was a funny coincidence)
