Get a dog sign saying beware of dog. They will think twice about entering

FWIW if you have a digital camera get as large a data card as possible and do a stop frame video at random times of the day out the front window towards the street.

It's how I caught the neighbor's kids doing the stupid things they did. Called P.D., told them what happened, they talked to the neighbor and their kids, came back and told me "B.S.", showed them the video, gave a copy, they went back talked to them again, came back and said "Will not happen ever again.".

Video's are harder to refute. Single images are.

Essentially the police department will do NOTHING unless you call and say you have someone held at gun point at your house or something is in progress. Why? Because they can't. Not enough people.

My advice... lock your stuff up good... keep it that way. Buy a gun... put a sign on your gate that says I heard you last time, I'll hear you this time with a picture of an 870 pump on it. I'm dead serious. Let them know that YOU know what they're doing. They'll move on to easier pray.

I'll send you a picture of my 870 if you want... it's pretty gangster looking. LOL!

Get a dog, feed it tons of food. Collect dog poop and put it into a potato gun. Wire potato gun to fence with an arm switch. Arm switch at night. Turn on surveillance camera.

WINNING.

break in suck but you can help deter them from hitting your house by making your property less of a soft target.

get a ADT alarm... if you can not do that at least put up a lawn sign, and a dummy alarm box in plain site

add lights (motion sensored are best) to dark areas around the gates drive ways, front door and back yard doors and windows

most homes are entered thru the garage door ... barricade it.
Garage Security: A Burglarproof Door - DIY Advice Blog - Family Handyman DIY Community

put locks on your fence doors.

put signs up that warn people of surveillance camera use and install some or at the very least look on ebay for good fake ones.

get a dog that BARKS! not one that will want to cuddle or hide.

get a gun

sleep with your cars key fob on your bed side... if someone starts to kick a door or whatever you can press the panic button and have your cars alarm start going off.

do all of these or some of them and your house won't be such a easy target to crooks.

stay safe.

I leave my car key next to bed at night... in case of break-in, I'd press the panic button to set off the alarm. I'd also install flood light w/ sensor on driveway/dark area... one time I was on vacation, a punk kid tried to check out my car on driveway & as soon as the light turned on he turned around & walked away (caught on surveillance camera). Speaking of surveillance camera, it's a good idea but can be pricey. I think Costco sells Lorex w/ 8 cameras for about $500 & I believe you can connect it to your smart phone.

this is what I have, It has motion sensors that triggers video recording, and you can set alerts to your phone via an app or computer.

Getting and owning a shotgun is easy, plus no one said load the gun. Maybe get a bean bag gun. Or rubber bullets. Or tazer. Or a sweet bow staff

Might sound cheesy but if I'm home and my house was being robbed I am the first responder and the robber would have to deal with me and my trusty shotgun. To be honest the police usually can't do anything for you and if they do respond they take to long to show up. Best bet is to get some motion flood lights, cameras and a firearm assuming you're old enough to own one. Long rifle/shotgun are 18+ and hand guns are 21+. Nothing says home protection like a shotgun.

its quite simple.

In CA, you may use deadly force, if you are in fear of your life. The key here, is would a "reasonable" person be "in fear of their life"

911, and the LEO are worthless, they are great at taking reports and cleaning up after a crime, but they have NO duty to protect citizens (as per the SCOTUS and its rulings)

So, arm yourself, become familiar with the laws, practice (I go to the range 3-4 times a month and put 50-200 rounds each time thru my carry guns), and be ready to defend your life. Now...I do not advocate becoming joe bad ***. Rather, put up security lights, cameras that cover the entrance points to your property, a good alarm system on the house. If you can afford it security doors with steel reinforcement along the doorframes.

However, getting back to what happened to you. Personally I would gone around the front and come in behind whoever was at the gate with my gun held low and at my side, and in a clear voice from 10-15 feet away said "Stop, I am armed do not move, the police have been called" (of course having 911 dialed and phone in my pocket so they can hear). The next move is theirs, if they run...LET THEM RUN. If they turn and face you, be ready, watch their actions and...if they reach for something, have a weapon in hand, or try to move towards you. You bring up the gun in a strong 2 handed stance, and say with a clear voice. "STOP, get down on the ground, I will defend myself"

but let me say this right now people, shooting at another person is...something you will never in your life forget. I shot at an intruder as many of you might know (ive told the story here before), 22 years ago, and I still get flashback nightmares from it. Its not something I am proud of, its something I had to do to defend my life. Do not take it lightly if you decide to intercept an intruder, and realize you may very well have to take a life.

WINNING.
Also 100% illegal, and a felony. Even a "poop firing potato gun" would be considered a "spring gun" as set up like that, and you don't want a felony like that on your record.

I know you were kidding around, but people should know, that even a non-lethal "active defense" weapon is illegal as hell. **** even a electric fence is illegal UNLESS you have it properly marked, and its under a specific voltage.
