Question AQ Motorsports Downpipe

I'm considering a Catted Downpipe for my '04 STi

Has anyone here used a AQ Motorsports / Harman Motive Downpipe?
Looks like a clone of the Cobb setup. The AQ is about $100 cheaper and I'm trying to figure out why.

I don't mind paying a few bucks to get quality parts. I really like the cast bellmouth design as it's stealthy and I can hide it under the factory shielding
Invidia or MadDadd kinda scream "I'm not stock or smog legal"

Thoughts and opinions welcome

Yeah I really want the mad dad set up but it's spendy.

I've been curious about the cast set up. How durable are they? Don't most companies put a logo on them anyways? Are they efficient? I don't really know the difference.

I've been pretty set on the divorced set up from maddad... the v2, since it came out.

I think the AQ downpipe is based on the same cast bell mouth as the Invidia. They just put the cat farther back and include an extra O2 bung up top. They're good downpipes in general and seem to perform well.

Any input on cast vs. welded plate?

I used to be all about the divorced wastegate design as well, but the more tuning I did, the less benefits i've seen. A well designed bell mouth generally works as well or better than most divorced pipes. The theory behind divorced pipes makes sense but in practice it doesn't seem to make any significant difference.

Interesting.

Since I'm planning to try and slide an EJ257 long block passed smog I'd like to keep it as lowprofile as possible. (thx for the input on that question before. I let that mess slide)

The cast pipes are usually a little heavier. In terms of sturdiness, I don't think I've ever seen any downpipe break up there, so there's no difference there. I think the cast pieces are cheaper these days than fabricating a sheet bell mouth so most companies are going that route. The important part is the design of the bell mouth.

I've never done a back to back comparison, but Invida pipes always make good power and the shape of the bellmouth makes sense IMO.

So Ed let me ask this: money is no object, what's the best catted down-pipe?
I image flow and power is pretty consistent, what fits and doesn't leak?

Most of the name brand downpipes have a pretty good fit at this point. Keeping them from leaking is all about not warping the flanges. A lot of people over tighten them and warp the flanges. I personally have good luck with Invidia and Cobb downpipes but I've seen plenty others that fit great as well. Just stay away from the eBay stuff and you should be fine.

Hmm - it looks like Invidia only offers a true bellmouth on the non-catted version of their Downpipe.

The Cobb flange looks a hell of a lot cleaner than AQ Motorsports in photos. I plan to run my stock cat back, so after buying an adaptor the cost is within $60.

Probably gonna go with Cobb and do it right the 1st time
