Hey bro, is your gym $70 for 3 training sessions a week? OR is it $70 for the whole month.

i believe it comes out like 71.something every month for 3 times a week and unlimited gym time. also you can take as many classes as you can in one day. i know a few guys and girls that do that back to back. But just talk to them, cus theyre really flexible and they dont give prices over the phone. They really make it around your time and theres always specials.

I would definitely go check out AKA in San Jose. My friend has been training there for about a year now and loves it. Good stand up and the Jiu Jitsu is the best in the area. The instructor Dave Camarillo is probably the best instructor for ground fighting in Northern California. They have trial classes and I would recommend taking some. Oh btw, that same friend trained at Fairtex for about 6 months and now at AKA. He said that the stand up is better at Fairtex, but AKA is pretty damn close.

Fairtex unfortunately had a fallout with its top trainer, Bunkard (Can't spell his last name.. lol), who since went to SF and started his own gym which I believe Choku Dori trains at? Of course Fairtex is still the real (painful) deal, though! But it's definately been downhill since the murder of its owner. This is all like....2 years ago though so take a trial class and see.

The thing my friends who have gone to AKA tell me is that the classes are less focused than Fairtex, but that's what someone told me, and I'm telling you, so you should definately take a free trial class and find out for yourself.

If you are looking for MT and JJ, look for Penninsula Muay Thai (a guy named Woody) / Marco Nasciamento (forgot his last name's spelling) Brazilian jujitsu in I think San Bruno. It's like 120 or something ridiculously cheap for both MT and BJJ unlimited a month. However if you want to be like even an amatuer fighter my friend tells me he hasn't seen a fighter at the smokers from Woody's gym in years.

In San Jose on Campbell. Chung Lees school is also in San Jose. He teaches San Shou. Real good fighter! Went to vegas and watched him at K-1. No one has dominated him yet. I met a guy from his school at one of my classes and he was real nice. He was the champ from his weight class. I would definitely check both of those schools out. Sorry about answering the question Choku If I left anything out, fill them in Choku!

Actually, AKA is off of Camden where Camden turns into Hillsdale in San Jose.

haha is this a joke or are you serious? You do know that kicking hardwood trees to condition shins is a myth right? The trees they kick in Thailand are like really soft (well...comparatively that is) or something.

Correct! In Thailand, poorer schools have their students kick banana trees or something with a flexible but thick/firm stalk. You can kiss your legs goodbye on a North American hardwood

Mark: Littleboyblue got you covered. I was gonna suggest Cung Le for San Shou as well (San Shou is Chinese free-form kickboxing style that originated in the Nationalist military, and is based on older dynastic military techniques. It emphasizes take-downs in addition to striking).

And about the whole Fairtex mess, here's the Cliff Notes: Head honcho Alex Gong was murdered last August, right at the height of Fairtex's power. There was a falling out involving control but especially money, and the woman in charge of paychecks and financing can take the lion's share of the blame for the dispute. Bunkerd "Fairtex" Faphimai, his son Boy, and star pupil Chris Cariaso left and opened Fight & Fitness on Bryant between 5th and 6th, where I train. Other instructors that left were Ryan Roy, Caesar Gracie, and I think George Tsutsui. The Daly City gym also closed down, and the SF location moved to Hawthorne Lane. Instructors that remained are Jongsanan (a living legend), Enn, and Ganyao, and the management was taken over by Fairtex Bangkok. Luckily, Bunkerd and co. have harbored no ill will towards Fairtex and now we're practically sister gyms it seems. In other words, Fight & Fitness and Fairtex are still on good terms (we still use a lot of Fairtex brand gear LOL).
