(anyone running Windows) Vista?

Anyone running vista? XP was giving me crap.... so I decided to format and since I had picked up a copy of vista from school I thought why not give it a full time whirl for a while (had.. it on a seperate HD that I booted with to play with) so far Ive been able to install every program I use, I'll give games a try in a couple of days. But so far a pretty positive experience besides trying to find ****.

I refuse to "upgrade" to Vista. I used it all through beta, and while it did get better, it is still a far cry from an upgrade.

I've been running Vista RC1 on my laptop for a couple months. For a "beta" version it's pretty solid. I've found a few things that bug the crap out of me, and I've found nothing that made me say Wow, this would be so worth it.

The security does seem better, but the constant "Is this OK to run?" popups do get annoying. And if you have 3rd part security products for XP, you're better off anyway.

this is soooo cool!!!

I found a way around the little annoying things about vista... use mac!
I'm sorry someone had to say it and you knew it was coming. I'm not trying to start a debate here (everyone knows mac is coming up, haha) just wanted to be the devils advocate.

smile you are using vista!

I'm still on RC1 (btw, when does it "expire"). I'm pretty happy with it, except for the crap nVidia drivers. I'd definitely say there's a performance hit with all the un-optimized drivers out there. Hopefully the hardware manufacturers get off their asses and release some decent drivers for vista.

btw, just bought a macbook pro for my sis for close to $2000. OSX is nice, but Mac's overall aren't my cup of tea. I feel very limited in my choice of software when it comes to the Mac platform...even OSS. Plus, I would feel very gyped if I spent $2000 on a laptop that was 1/2 the speed of my $700 built from scratch C2D desktop.

They can't come up with an original thought ever! The new IE? Firefox. Vista? OS X. Zume or Zune or whatever the hell it is? iPod.

The only time I need anti-virus on my Mac is when I dual boot into XP. Super weak. OS X doesn't need 20 to 30 background applications to run. Why spend all this money on 4 million gigs of ram and a 34 googleplex MHz processor when Windows turns into a 486 with 56k of ram.

Typically I stick with Linux for all of my computers (desktops, laptops, and servers). The only exception is the laptop I use for gaming which runs XP. Macs are nice, but the lack of a right mouse button out of the box blows.

OS 10.5 is coming out soon!

I have no particular preference, but I use a Mac everyday. I say both OS's have their pros and cons.

Vista Pros: It's pretty, better security model than past versions, BitLocker, and it gives you an excuse to upgrade your hardware
Vista Cons: It's made by Microsoft, it typically forces you to upgrade the hardware in your computer to satisfy the minimum requirements*, it has too many prompts when doing basic things, DirectX 10 is only available in Vista so future games will force an upgrade of Windows**

OSX Pros: Simple, easy to use, OpenGL for 3D (none of this DirectX crap), runs on a wide range of Apple hardware, has a BSD userland***
OSX Cons: Not all software is available for it****, Apple hardware is difficult to upgrade*****

* - This statement is based on the Home Premium, Business, and Ultimate edition requirements. From Microsoft:
Code:
    * 1 GHz 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
    * 1 GB of system memory
    * 40 GB hard drive with at least 15 GB of available space
    * Support for DirectX 9 graphics with:
          o WDDM Driver
          o 128 MB of graphics memory (minimum)
          o Pixel Shader 2.0 in hardware
          o 32 bits per pixel
    * DVD-ROM drive
    * Audio Output
    * Internet access (fees may apply)
** - The DirectX 10 on Wikipedia states plainly and clearly that DirectX 10 is only available on Vista. Luckily, most game developers are hesitant to jump to an API which will alienate a good number of potential customers.
*** - Having a BSD userland allows OSX users to build and run Unix (and to a certain extent, Linux) applications on their system, making OSX even more versatile.
**** - Historically, software availability for MacOS has lacked seriously. In recent times companies like Adobe and even Microsoft have made software compiled for the MacOS. Smaller development firms, even single person companies, produce a good number of titles specifically for MacOS. The argument against MacOS is losing ground thanks to the people who write applications in their free time.
***** - Search Google for apple upgrade or mac upgrade and 90% of results are related to software. Of the companies that actually sell hardware upgrades only a handful sell things like motherboards and CPUs.

until something breaks. warranties are nice.

on top of that I doubt your built from scratch comes with all of the things that come with the apple units and I highly doubt it looks as good.

Also doubt it's twice as fast....depending on what you're processing.
