anyone with an ra gearset?
hey im gonna rebuild my transmission soon and was thinkin of gettin an v6 ra gearset.
the only thing that's keeping me from doing it for sure is i hear the 5th gear ratio makes it so that at like 70-80mph in 5th is like 4k rpm???
i do a lot of highway driving so i cant have that...
anyone local have one that can confirm? the transmission section is dead pretty much here and i know se has them online so i figured someone would have it...
thanks in advance

I have an v6 ra gearset and yes the 5th at around 75mph is around 4k i believe its quite a noticeable difference than the stock ratio. Thank god I dont drive too much freeway =) but there are sets that have the option to have the stock 5th ratio

in my '02 the stock ratios had it spinning 3000 rpm at just about 78-80 mph, now with the RA set 3000 in 5th is more like 67-68, so yeah 80 is getting up there but not 4000, more like 3500 or so.
But man, passing is so much better being at least closer to being in the power band at legal freeway speeds.
I can still get 30+mpg, but only at 65-70 where I used to be able to get that at 80.
If I'd known about the stock 5th ratio option, I might have done it that way, but 1-4 are so much better that I still think the trade off was worth it.

Just have them put in a WRX 5th gear that way you still have the RA gears and 5 top end will be for freeway driving. I was going to get that in my 99rs but it got totaled so never bothered with it. I found it for 1,700 in the casing from Arizona. Send them money they send you a RA gear set in a whole transmission. You replace it at the shop and send them the core your old one.

Yeah 1-5 with the RA is set up to hit the sweet spot in spool. Freeway driving for gas mileage sucks but it sure is fun.
I still don't think you need a tranny. My money is on a stuck syncro.
Getting that stock 5th gear is a must if you plan on driving on the highway a lot.

if your not going more then 250whp you have no need for any RA's save the money. I had 340whp with a stock 5 speed for over a year and nothing went bad, also many track and hard driving days on it

my Mazda GTX had JDM gears 1-4 and a USDM mazda 626 5th gear...so 80mph would be a reasonable 3600 IIRC opposed to tjhe JDM 4400 rpm at 80!

hmm possibly..but my 5spd is so bad to daily drive..i get to stop signs and my car wont get into first right away so i have to pump the clutch a few times before i can get into gear...and i can rarely shift into 4th without grinds or a harsh shift..
