Anyone know where to get a plug and patch?

So I got a nail/screw in my tire, I think it's enough away from the edge to get a patch. Tires are only a year old, tons of tread left. I do have a track day coming up, and was hoping to do a plug and patch combo.

Anyone know a place that does this in the bay area? (live in the Peninsula/work in Berkeley)

Unless you guys really think it's necessary to get a new tire and shave it down = more $$$! But I know safety is worth a few more $$$ !

TIA

hrm, I wouldn't track a tire that has a plug in it, most plug kits will tell you not to use with "excessive speeds" etc.

when I ripped the sidewall off my tire (curb that sticks too far out in the road + lack of coffee + trying to get around stupid portland bus = hole in teh sidewall) I bought a used tire with a slight bit more tread and had it shaved, though I had a biatch of a time finding someone that would shave the tire for me here in PDX, luckily I convinced a truck tire place (semi trucks) to do it...

my .02 plus some rambling for good measure.

That's why I mentioned plug "and" patch, not plug "or" patch!

Actually, he's right. The plug and patches (i'm assuming you mean the ones where they plug from the inside) reduce the speed rating of your tire. For example a V-Rated tire would be considered an H-Rated tire at that point.

Some cars require certain speed ratings, like how a WRX would never be able to use an H rated tire because of how poorly the car would handle/brake/etc. However, the reduction of speed ratings due to patches are only to say that it should not be pushed excessively and is still safe to use on a car that requires what the original tire's speed rating was.

Also, as a general rule of thumb, at America's Tire Co. they will not patch a tire with more than 2 patches. Why? It will reduce the speed ratings too much to allow the tire to be safe to drive on.

If I was wrong I stand corrected "Keisatsu". I guess I was thinking the kind where they patch it from the inside, but thought I read something about both a plug and then a patch on the inside also.

<< noob!

GREAT NEWS ALL!

So I brought the wheel/tire in to get a patch at the Firestone not to far from the house, so that I can get around and . . . . the screw didn't go through, and they didn't find any leak either (in there water tub thing). So I'll observe it over the next few days.

But I'm stoked! I get to keep my speed rating! They were saying by regulations, once you patch a tire the rating goes down to an "S" no matter what the original rating was!

Keisatsu = thanks for the concern, I don't want that either. If I did patch it I would have done that for now , then order another of the same tire and have it shaved to match the other.

Thanks to all others who responded.
