Is anyone here are D-SLR camera pro?

I'm looking into D-SLR, was wondering which is a better choice and so on. It even better that you have used both Canon and Nikon...so I can get a more neutral answer.

Also, what did you guys think of the new Sony D-SLR a-100?

sony's d-slr to my understanding is a konica-minolta based system. north worth it imho.

i've used both canon and nikon.

if you go canon, get the eos-5d. you'll love the full frame sensor and the highspeed burst shots.

if you go canon, get the d200 or if short on cash, d70s. i love how steady this camera is.

either or camera works out nicely. stick with canon or nikon. you wont regret it.

test out the cameras before you should buy.

if you want to test out the nikon d70s, i'll bring mines out to uckk this coming tues. so you can try it out.

i had the d70s before i upgraded to the d200. IMO the d200 is an awesome camera over the d70s, but it also comes w/ a hefty price tag.

most important question...what's your budget, do you currently own any lenses, how's your photography level like? ex. f-stop, ISO, shutter speed, 1/125 @ 1.4? you can have a 1ds and still take bad pictures if you don't know how to use it.

I'm a noob to SLR camera, donno much about it... but I been messing around with my digital camera, old sony V1. great camera and great picture. too bad that my battery start to die out ( it use to shoot more), and I can't fine replacement...most of them said that they stop making it....oh well

and because of it, I was planning for a little upgrade.

about the sony's first SLR, I was kinda worry, too. due to "it" is the first one, but other things about the sony is, I know the CCD sensor is the same one as the Nikon D200 (23.6 x 15.8 mm). same mp, plus the super-steady shot (CCD shift Anti-Shake system from MK) and anti-dust...

only different I saw is the iso only goes up to 1600 (which I don't think I will ever use up to that, maybe when I'm messing around with it). max shutter speed is 1/4000(which I also don't think I will use up that much). and $700 cheaper...wel...that before tax ...

On this coming tues, I might drop by...I will let u know again on Monday nite.

of cause not as pro as you guys do, but I was planning to get something decent to learn from it... not really need super one. I would say the most would be around $1000 +/-.

I also notice some doesn't come with lens, so my choice will be the one with the lens.

Biggest thing is going to the store and actually messing around with them and holding them in your hands. If you have larger hands you may not like the Canon at all. D70 is kind of in no-mans land, because it doesn't have the features of the D200, and you can get most of the same features in the D50, which has USB 2.0 and is significantly cheaper. It's really a personal preference thing, because you can take good pictures with just about anything, so it comes down to what fits in your hand best, price, ease-of-use, and lenses.

I am not a pro but love to have some good pics here and there. i didn't want to break the bank with the camera, just something nice. I ended up with a D50 and pretty happy with it. I am glad that I did, I rather save the money for more lenses...

Whats your shooting? If you plan to spend a lot of time doing action shooting (racing, sports, etc), you simply cannot beat Canon. ONLY Canon has reasonbly priced USM+IS lenses. All of Nikon's fast focusing lenses are major $, and you can get a totally decent Canon IS+USM f/4 70-200 flourite lens for ~600 shipped. Try that with a Nikon.

Ignore the kits that 'come with' a lens. The lenses in those kits suck ***. If you are just learning, get a 50mm f/1.8 prime lens and learn how your camera works/how to properly choose f-stop, ISO, shutter speed, etc., then spend the money on a nicer lens. Personally, I carry a 18-55 f/4.5-5.6, 28-135 f/3.5-5.6 USM+IS, and a 70-300 f/4.5-5.6 in my bag. My next lens will be a 1:1 macro lens, and then the monster 70-200 f/2.8L IS+USM II lens (but that one is a $1700 lens!). I personally use a Canon 300D/Digital Rebel, but if you wanted to spend some more money would could get the lower end numbered bodies.

Dont worry about making sure you have ISO 1600 - if you need to shoot with that high of ISO setting, you are using too slow of a lens, and you need a faster one. Also, 1/4000th is pretty fsking fast - no need for the 1/8000th of some of the higher end camera if you dont need all of their other features, just pick up a neutral density filter for situations where you need to stop the camera WAY open but have too much light....

Ultimately, its stupid to buy a camera based on the camera features. Buy it based on a SYSTEM. Personally, I think Canon has the better SYSTEM out there - better lenses for cheaper...Personally, I think photography is about the abilities of the photographer (not something affected by the camera body you choose, as long as its decent) and the lens chosen. Figure out who has the kinds of lenses you want, and by a body based on that. For that reason alone, I would ignore the sony offerings.

Other random bits
1) Shoot only in RAW format. No point in having a camera that can shoot RAW, and then let it make its (often poor) decisions about color and exposure during JPG conversion. The canons (maybe nikon too) do a clever embedding of a JPG into the RAW, which can be useful. I usually actually slightly over expose, because I know I can adjust the color properly to get the shadow detail right in photoshop.

2) SPEND YOUR MONEY ON LENSES, NOT THE CAMERA.

3) Put UV filters on every lens you have. Cheap protection. $20 for a new Tiffen UV filter is FAR less than a new $500 lens. Buy extra lens caps and body caps and keep then in your bag. You WILL lose a cap when trying to swap lenses quickly/contorting your body to get a shot.

4) Get a tabletop tripod. They are cheap, small, and VERY useful.

5) TAKE A PHOTOGRAPHY CLASS if you you dont have a talented buddy to teach you. Understanding the interplay between f-stop, ISO, shutter speed, exposure compensation, etc and how they affect blur, depth-of-field, field of view, etc is important to take a good picture...More important that even lenses or a good body.

+1 for using RAW, much better than jpeg. And yes, Nikon has the RAW + JPG feature, but I don't really see the point.

thanks a lot for the great info, yeah...that what I'm thinking of, too. because I don't use that amount of iso and shutter, that why I'm looking at not at the super camera.

and yes, I do take like to take action pictures. Badminton for example, my old V1 can't hold up on the fast swing, also I can't turn the flash on in the gym (or like u said, it probably my skill level...haha)

I also want to get everything ready, cause I might goto Germany this coming Aug. WRC there u know...but still, it an unsure thing.
