I go up to the butte mountains(sierra mountains) from time to time. It's an 1.5 hour trek to the top of the mountains.

Good stuff.

Be careful when walking on granite. It can be VERY slippery because small pebbles break off into marble size pieces. Wouldn’t want to learn the hard way by slipping off a steep face.

Haven't been to Bear Basin. I stick around Ice House, Kyburz and the back country of Oso Springs where there's no people in sight.

Did 3 weeks, bout 130 miles up in ansel adams wilderness. By yosemite. Did a couple miles in yosemite. Few peaks climbs. Some repelling. some pretty crazy stuff. Pretty damn fun. Was in high school. I used to do some back in the day. Haven't done rock climbing or backpacking in years. Still got a pretty decent pair of boots though. Almost brand new. I wore the soles off a brand new $300 pair of boots on the 130 mile trip. They gave me a new pair when I got back. finished the last couple days of the trip in tennis shoes.

I used to all the time when I lived in upstate NY. I really miss it. My wife is sort of an anti-wilderness. She just doesn't have any experience. I would love to start buying some gear one of these days. For anything outside of a day hike you need to be perpared. 3 days can turn into a 6-8 day struggle real fast. Just that happened to me and my buddy one time. Of course it was long before GPS. Luckily we had brought enough equipment with us. It made the extra 60 hours bearable. Be safe and have a nice trip.
Late,
Jeff

true that. 4 days could get very interesting if you'll be walking the whole time.

How many miles in are you planning to go?

When I did my last big one we packed our own food. 14 days worth and had a guide meet us somewhere for the food for the last 10 days. No toilets. No showers. No people. I'm talking in the middle of bumfuctnowhere.

Very easily could have turned ugly a couple times. Had one guy blow an ankle. I ended up taking on at least half of what he had in his pack. Probably an extra 30 plus pounds on top of my already heavy pack. Packed weighed about 85 pounds. I weighed about 150...haaa. Got stuck behind schedule and had to go down a gnarly rock slope in the dark with not enough flash lights for people. Was fun for me, but I'm not all there at time if you know what I mean.

Definately. make sure you have enough stuff for a couple extra days if you're gonna be going anywhere there won't be people within a few miles. and don't forget to leave a map with your general location with someone incase you don't show up for work on tuesday.

Don't forget a H2O filter/pump and some spare iodine tabs as well.

looks like a very reasonable trip for 4 days. and a very reasonable loop.

Jack and coke...mmmmm. just remember.....bring out what you brought in.

jeff_ I hate those damn iodine pills. We were all over the place. I should dig out some pictures of some of the area we covered. But yeah they had us doing those iodine drops so we don't get the craps. After the first week or so I got sick of it and said screw this. I only used them if I had to take water from non moving areas. If the water was moving I didn't use em. Which was most of the time. I tried to fill up everytime I saw moving water. It's colder and fresher anyways.

Pretty crazy to be hiking up a snow pack at around 10k feet in august when you can hear the melt off running under the pack your walking on...and see it at times..haaaa. I was wishing I had my snowboard. Did manage to make some chocolate ice cream while on it though..haaaa. Oh and that watermellon snow....take it from me....crazily enough....it tastes like watermellon.
