I only have TCP/IP installed, so maybe I have to install netbios? The network game option is greyed out, and it won't let me select host/join game, not even set my player options.
My dorm was wired (first dorm on campus to be wired) and we had instant 19.2k connections to the internet (faster than a modem!) But I had a really crappy computer then, and would play games like moria and angband instead of Doom.
Then I lived in an apartment with 3 other guys, 2 of which had computers. We wired it up with a 10base2 coax LAN to play doom, d3d, Warcraft (before Warcraft II was out), Descent, D2, Warcraft II, Command and Conquer and later Quake. And I remember setting up D2 to play over kali (DOS internet gaming NETBIOS over TCP/IP... that was fun to configure)
I actually still used the 10base2 LAN up until a couple months ago when I moved straight to gigabit (BIG jump)
I also knew a dude who rented a house with 2 other guys with computers. We'd get together at his house and have 6-8 people LAN parties.
Duke played okay on our 486s, but Quake was another matter altogether. As I recall, Quake pretty much required a Pentium. I still have GLQuake installed ... I played it a few months ago at 1600x1200 with no problems. Not like when I had my Pentium Pro and 3Dfx Voodoo and could barely play it at 640x480.
